a "Maid of Honor" is a woman who has never married. a "Matron of Honor" is a woman who is or has been previously married. That's all. There's no virginity test.

G'day Slicks, Thank you for your question. If the chief Bridesmaid is single, she is a maid of honor. If she is married, she is a matron of honor. The position is the equivalent of the best man and is usually performed by the brides best friend or sister. In the UK, the term maid of honor refers to one of the queens attendants and the term bridesmaid is widely used. These days the difference is a little blurred as in the case that you cited.
