  • Because my wife doesn't want to have sex.
  • I started cos I thought it was cool (I was young and foolish). I then smoked because I was permanently stressed. Now I'm addicted (old and foolish).
  • i use to do it out of stress and I stared smoking because I was an actress and i stopped after my uncle died of lung cancer
  • Because I am a nicotine addict.
  • I like the aroma of tobacco. I only smoke occasionally, but it's similar to coffee, whisky or wine - all of which also happen to foment addiction.
  • Smoking helps me think. It is sort of like a mental reset of sorts. I never NEED a cigarette, and I don't do it in most company, but I do smoke. Also, because I have a small fascination with smoke/fire. Natural, I guess.
  • Generally I have a craving for a cigarette when people really p*ss me off. It is bad for my health, but oh-so-good for theirs.
  • Because I like the feeling it gives me-- not only the nicotine, but the associations I have with sitting outside and smoking, whether alone or with someone else. And because my body feels elegant, sort of in a "French Actress"-y way. I'm not sure I can explain that...
  • Quite simple, i am addicted. I hate the smell of them my children hate it i have tried to give up without success, but im going for it again at the end of the month.
  • Because I am addicted.I have done alot of stupid things in my life, but STARTING to smoke cigarettes was by far one of the dumbest decisions I ever made.
  • I just liked the act of smoking. But not enough to make me keep doing it.
  • Because im bloody thick and stupid and most probably because my mother smoked i followed in her stupid ways.
  • I started when I was 11, because my friends were doing it, honestly and I didn't want to not be included, so I did it too. I finally stopped when I was 20, and I still smoke when I drink, when I get these horrendus cravings. I don't smoke on a regular basis, but I stopped because I knew it was so bad, it was expensive and it was part of a stipulation in my relationship with my BF. My grandmother recently died of lung cancer, so it really nails the head into the coffin, especially when I think about the fact that she had quit smoking about 60 years before she even got the lung cancer. She was 82, and quit in her early 20's. If that doesn't tell you how bad they are, I don't know what will.
  • Its more the habit of having something in my hand while I drive and when I have a drink. Its more of a habit than an addiction, I never really crave a cig.
  • I used to smoke when I was very young, around 12 until I was about 18. They say if you don't start before 18 you won't become addicted. My now boyfriend smokes a pack a day. He didn't smoke that much when I met him in the summer and he always smoked outside. In the winte he smokes inside and I started to want to smoke. It didn't make me as sick as it used to, I think because the niccotene in my body from the 2nd hand. So now I smoke, but only when he is around.....I only feel the need when I see him light up.
  • Yes, Camel Lights in a box. I know they are horrible for me, but i really enjoy smoking. I know i should quit, but for the time being i am ok with it.
  • i really enjoy a cappucino and a smoke in a cafe. I really enjoy a smoke after sex. And with my tea when i get up in the morning. I guess i am addicted.
  • Sigh...the only reason I ever did was because of extreme amounts of stress. I mean, the real extreme stress. The kind of extreme stress that makes you lose your sanity, which I did and never fully recovered. I just did it...it was easy to get them. I mean, I could have gotten any drug I wanted where I live.
  • So I can have an excuse for wearing lots of nicotine patches!
  • When I have an alcoholic beverage, you can count on my cigarrette being lit...When I am stressed about something, there it is again. I smoke because of habits I have established in response to difficult or stressful situations and because, why hell, they are also physically addictive!
  • Because i WILL NOT be told i can't...
  • sad to say I like it .. I like to have a cup of tea and a cig. I only smoke a couple a day. have quit twice and gone back
  • I smoke because I couldn't stop if I wanted to, and also because I still actually like it. I started when I was 13... twenty-one years ago. Wow. I couldn't imagine life without cigarettes. How else would I be able to walk away from my desk unaccounted for every hour for ten minutes at a time? :)
  • Because it helps me escape certain social interactions I don't want to be part of.
  • It is a cheap buzz and can be relaxing. And not to say that smoking makes you look cool, but seriously, smoking makes you look cool. lol.
  • I used to only smoke when I was drinking or if I was pissed off, but now I'll light one up if I'm bored-especially when driving.
  • Partly because I enjoy it and partly out of addiction.
  • studies say that people smoke because of stress.
  • Stress relief, headache relief, just relief. Whenever I'm really in need of a moment to myself I have a smoke, usually a nice stale one because I smoke so rarely, but it helps me clear my head, take a moment to think, and of course, the nicotine helps calm me down.
  • I don't I think its kind of gross, and I hate being around someone when they are smoking.
  • I started when I was 15 because that's what all the cool kids did. As I got older smoking became part of the social party scene (the 80's - sex, drugs and Studio 54). Then as I got even older, I realized it helped me keep food away from my mouth (I have weight gain phobia). Then I almost had a heart attack and finally made the decision I want to live or atleast not contribute to my own death, so I quite and have been smoke free for 7 years... and still sexy!
  • I don't smoke cigerettes. My dad used to. But that was when I was a baby. He stopped smoking b/c it's the responsible thing to do. He knows the effects of smoking and he tells us about how your teeth and the space between your fingers turns yellow. He also gave my brother cigerette and told him to inhale deeply. My brother said he felt really nauseated. I don't think he'll ever pick up smoking- ever! I'm glad my dad made the right choice.
  • I really don't know, I just do! When I'm stressed out p*ssed off of drinking, mostly when i drink. Then again I can go days without even hevaing one at all. I quite cold turkey to have my kids but started right back after they were born, There is no rhyme or reason its just something to do i guess.
  • I started very late of my age of 30... don't feel bad if you smoke or don't think you are a total healthy person if you don't smoke... enjoy life and be responsible.
  • I started smoking at grade school,my friend and i thought it was cool..boy was we ever Wrong, bad, bad habit..
  • I tried smoking to see what the fuss was all about...aside the social "coolness" to it. I tried it for about 2 months, didn't like it, and I quit. It did feel good after a run though.
  • Cause they keep me sane.
  • I thought it was cool, knew it would piss off my parents. And now I'm addicted...LOL
  • i started because my parents and sister smoked and they used to go away from me to smoke, and being young (12 at the time!) i wanted to be involved and so i picked up smoking for these reasons. now, whenever i try to stop, i miss the social interactions that are involved in it as all my friends are smokers. it's not cool as it kills, the same as guns aren't cool. they are just destroyers of life. x
  • because it gives you a momentary high, that is, if you do it right. and because it's the only legal way to get that unique feeling, i do it when i'm under stress.
  • I SMOKE DUE TO BOREDOM SOMETIMES BUT MAINLY HABBIT. IT'S MY WAY OF GETTING TIME OUT IF I NEED TO CHILL OUT OR CALM DOWN ETC, BUT HAVING SAID THAT I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO GIVE UP!
  • I've quit, but I have noticed that when I smoked, I was a lot calmer (unless I hadn't had a cigarette in a while). I have so much nervous energy now.. but I would never go back. It's hard to be objective about why you smoke if you haven't gone periods without. The physical and mental addiction goes on for months. I would say I smoked almost wholly because I was addicted, however enjoyable I found it at times.
  • 'Cause I enjoy it and when I smoke I don't eat.
  • i don't but i know why some people do: To be cool, relieve stress, cop with stupid stuff, "Every one is doing it" and peer pressure
  • I really need the five minutes by myself and it just feels good. I get fidgety without a cigarette in my hand and honestly, I like the exhale. I won't smoke on a really windy day because there is just no joy in it. I only smoke about a pack a week anyway. Oh yeah, not at all anymore...because I just found out I'M PREGNANT!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • i don't i'm quitting today, just now made it 12 hours.
  • Started really young, got addicted, cannot stop. I have tried several ways, but when I gain a couple of pounds, I think it is not worth it. Maybe I need phyco help.....
  • I started for a girl...the worst reason to start, but it's how I started talking to her. When I was a teen, she was at the bus stop and needed a light...I didn't have one, but needed an excuse to talk to her, so I grabbed a pack and a lighter from the store, and started talking to her. We actually dated for 3 years, and since then, I've tried to quit and haven't succeeded.
  • I have been hooked on cigarettes since I was 7 years old. It is an addiction. I have tried many times to quit without sucess....
  • cuz duno
  • This might sound crazy but smoking turns me on. I started because I wanted to know what being addicted felt like. I smoked my 1st cig when I was 8, my aunt had told me to throw her cig in the toilet so I took a puff. I smoked on and off until college, whenever I could get a hold of one (not very often). When I went to college, everyone I hung with smoked. Like I said, wanted to experience that feeling of "addicted". Sure enough, slowly but surely I became addicted to smoking cigarettes. I sneak them cuz my bf doesn't like them, but I still love smoking. I love feeling the "urge" for a cigarette, I love the sensation. I know it's bad but being addicted to cigs really do it for me!
  • I started smoking in high school due to peer pressure, wanting to fit in, be cool. Now I feel like a loser sometimes and I disgust myself. I am going to the doctor next week to discuss a stop smoking plan, I just can't stand it anymore and I wanna quit before I develop any health problems, if I havent already.
  • peer pressure at first, then i started needing alot in peabody kansas meeting a friends stepmother whos psycho. Sure i got caught not only popping a daily pill that morning but reeking of smoke and she flipped. I now smoke outside there house when i visit monthly, easier to handle, shes on new meds.
  • When I was younger it was out of boredom. I never gave into peer pressure nor tried using it to excuse my actions growing up. I knew what the long term affect would be but didn't care at the time. Just like drinking, I tried drinking because I wanted to try it, seen the adults doing it & thought it would make me look more grown up, just like smoking. But now as adult I see how rediculous it looks on kids smoking & I feel embarrassed that I was one of those stupid looking kids. I have breathing problems now & cough often because of my own stupidity but I'm going to see how my mom works out on the new meds for stop smoking & more then likely will ask the doc to prescribe me some. The side effects to the new stop smoking pills are alot easier to live with then the ones they come out with a few years ago that would make you have a heart attack if you fell off the wagon so to speak & smoked a cig. Personally I don't find to many people that say they have done better since they quit it the oppisite they say they have more breathing problems, short of breath & get sick easier along with gaining alot of weight. I wonder if the damage is already done & would it do many any good to quit.
  • NO never i hat cigarettes. http://www.skincarefairy.com
  • I started by myself in the bathroom with i smoke i stole from my mum, i was never pressured and i didnt even know any one who smoked at the time, I was just curious to know what it was like, then after a few yrs I became addicted and NO i do not regret it because it was a choice I made by myself. And I know one day I will want to stop and when that day comes I know i will be ready for it. I do ask myself though, why? I still have no idea, i do get stressed but not alot, but I still enjoy it, and people need a release system some choosse drug, booze, anger, excercise, writing, sleeping so really it just might be some ones way of releasing tension, stress, anger, bordom or what ever. I also think that people should not look down on people because they smoke, every one has their little thing, and smoking has become ours. SIMPLE
  • Not since February 3, 2006.
  • I'll share a cigarette socially with a partner once in a blue moon, but I'm not addicted. I like cigars better, but still only smoke once every few months/years.
  • I started smoking when I was 12 years old and stopped 16 years ago. My little boy was having breathing trouble and needed an operation .Coming home frome the hospital I lost the cigarettes and never picked them up again. I could stop for him but I was not strong enough to stop for myself at the time. he gave me a great gift .
  • To do my small part in minimizing the tax burden for non-smokers. In the past 5 years the state and federal taxes have gone up 168%. Now not all that money has gone into programs to prevent me from polluting your air. The easy solution would be to take them off the market and be done with it. But then where is the government going to make it's pocket change at? Face it, it's a cash cow and thats why the government continues to raise the taxes. They want me to smoke.
  • addiction
  • because I don t have the self discipline needed to quit. (and because I am not afraid of the reprocussions yet)
  • I enjoy smoking. I think it is relaxing and I honestly think that on others, the smell is sexy. I don't consider myself addicted though, because i have not smoked for a week or two at a time simply because I didn't feel like it or I didn't have any money for fags.
  • it helps to relax me
  • Because it is pleasurable & relaxing.
  • I started becuz my dad would stress me out to the point i would cry and i wanted to kill myself and one of my friends told me to smoke one and tell me if i felt better... i did not but then when i would get upset over him ( he is kinda abusive * verbally*) and then i got into a relationship which was very abusive and he raped me and made me do things i did not want to do. so now i smoke to cpe with my past and to handle stress from everything .... I smoke so i do not cut, so i do not hurt the people who want me happy.... and i do it with out anyone knowing
  • Because I pretty much enjoy smoking and too, over the years, it has become a habbit. The fact that all my friends and family smoke too also has something to do with it as well I'm sure.
  • Because they are not very edible and I can't have sex with them. They also are not a reliable means of transportation.
  • I smoke a couple at night just to make me calm down. It relaxes me.
  • If I'm sitting somewhere, I get bothered by people asking me what's wrong. If I'm sitting with a cigarette in hand, they know I'm thinking and leave me alone. Crazy, right?
  • I actually started smoking to get my wife to quit...but I've always like to inhale smoke from fires...maybe I just want to die...just slowly lol
  • I just quit...i'm having surgery and i have to be smoke free for two months...
  • i started at a party one night and just carried on, about 3 months ago!
  • Because I lace them with PCP so I can smoke my stuff out in public and no one even notices. I LOVE cigarettes for this main reason! ... Other than that they're disgusting. A terrible, terrible habit.
  • I'm 13 and i smoke occasionally, but don't look at me as one of those stupid kids who smokes because i think it makes me look cool. I don't do it because of peer pressure. in fact i've only got 2 or 3 mates that smoke. I do it because, well there is no reason, when you're a kid you want to smoke, it makes you feel grown up. I'm not an addict, i smoke one cigarette a week, not even that in fact, probably one every 3 weeks. Some people i know say they smoke because it made them concentrate better and do better in tests. Others smoke because they can buy them, because they look old enough and it makes them feel older i guess. I feel sorry for my mate who's smoked half a fag and think he's addicted. He keeps trying to make me get him fags but i don't want to get them even for me!!! I do not want to get addicted, hence why i hardly ever smoke. Do not judge people who smoke. I think that instead of putting on the packets " smoking seriously damages your health "... they should put " You Could Get Hit By A Bus Tomorrow" O well.. it made me laugh. I'm not too bothered about the risks of smoking, as i want a bike and join the Parachute Reg. Although i do not want to be addicted during training, which is my insentive not to smoke alot. Sorry for the Essay and smoking doesn't make you look cool or hard, it makes you look un-educated and makes you stink...(if you smoke mayfairs) but i don't, and i don't smoke in public because i think it's wrong to make other people breath in your smoke, which is why i only smoke in other smokers presence. Thanyou :)
  • I dont smoke ciggarettes...they ar nasty and way too expensive.
  • I started in high school because I was stressed out with college prep and home life. Quit for two years and now I'm starting again. The reason for that is because I thought it would be interesting (turns out it really is. For me, anyway).
  • I roll my own. No not wacky ones. Normal ones.
  • I started when I was 11 my sister said she would disown me if I didn't ... I have quit a couple times, the longest I have quit for is a year and a half... But I guess its my fall back. Some day I'll quit for good.
  • I smoke because I enjoy cigarettes, they taste good and keep me sane in an industry where the sane are few and far between. (aviation) And to be honest I just quit driniking and some other stuff so they are all I've got, well that and coffee. ;-)
  • Cigars actually. And because I'm addicted as hell to them. Really bad even.
  • because i'm addicted and it's a habit. i really wish i never started.
  • BECAUSE it's a big boy's candy.and I am a big boy now.
  • well...i dont.
  • Because it tastes good, it makes me feel good and it's fun to smoke.
  • I don't I've never smoked anything in my life and plan to keep it that way.
  • Another reason for me is because the smell calms me down and I like the taste. :D
  • My wife does and it makes me want to.
  • massive chemical addiction
  • help coping with powerlessness and a will to die before I do anymore harm to others in my life who are soo easily harmed, any advice on living in a mine feild like that?
  • because i so horney
  • I started smoking when I was fourteen(mainly because of stress), that went on for about two years where I stopped for five. Then a few months ago (with things going not all that well) I was in a gas station just getting a snack, an I saw my pack on the self behind the cashier.I mainly just bought them for nostalgia, but half way threw that first bud I got that nice punch an buzz, an I've been smoking since. I don't smoke allot right now mainly due to prices an fear of getting hooked on another bad habit, but I doubt I'll stop anytime soon. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Menthol ~<3
  • I finally am in a great mindset after being the Van Wilder at my college. I was a pothead/casual weed smoker which quickly progressed into 3 grams a day habit/social cigarette smoker which quickly progressed to 1 1/2 packs a day/drank a decent amount/dabbled in lsd and shrooms/and tons of legal yet to be tested buy on the internet drugs ie: salvia and so forth. I was what they call "self medicating" yet I didn't realize I was or why I was. Let me first start with a good old background story/cheesy montage. I was never a great student in school... ever. Yet the last I was...was stupid, even though after awhile I was having serious doubts. I took on the role of class clown. I rarely did my homework instead looking outside at the kids playing on recess. why couldn't I be out there playing instead of doing these boring assignments. I would constantly pass by the skin of my teeth due to my ability to charm pretty much anyone. Overall throughout my entire school career K-12, I was acting in order to fit in, but on the inside I was feeling so disconnected/lonely from everyone. The absolute worst part was not having any answers for why I was behaving as I was, and believe me its not as if me/my parents didn't try. In elementary school they thought it was ADD, got tested and wasn't. They said I just had a problem with authority so on and so forth. Fast Forward to my Senior Year in College. I got to the point where I didn't want to/couldn't fake it anymore. I was seriously contemplating suicide because I personally couldn't deal with the world and how it was treating me. I felt so low about myself self, had no self esteem, wasn't eating at all, just smoking what I came to realize, tons and tons of money I would charm from parents/earn from jobs. I willingly told my parents how I was feeling one weekend when I was home. This was after I accidentally pick up and read a book at home "An Unquiet Mind" that my mother had laying around. I got only a few chapters in and began to cry because it was honestly the first time I was able to ever fully relate to someone/something...ever!. The words felt as if they were my words, and I felt so much for the writer, it was life changing. I had heard the word Bipolar/ manic depression mentioned before, but I never really gave them any thought. Turns out it runs in my family on my mother's side, which makes the possibility of her children developing it higher. With the support of my parents I took a medical withdrawl from my final semester, in which I went to probably 5 of the 50 classes total. Yet when you have a medical reason, man do people let you get your way. Not saying you should abuse it because that won't get you anywhere. I really didn't care about school anymore and would rather have said fuck it, but it saved my ass in a situation that I thought was hopeless and essentially allowed me to stand up for myself and my illness. I willingly entered myself into a inpatient treatment facility which was followed by a few months of out patient behavioral therapy. I pretty much had to learn how to live, but this time...really. The stigma of mental hospitals may still be there, but let me tell you, this was more of a resort than a hospital. what I found was 90% of the people I met there were exactly like me, it was amazing. I was there for 10 days in which they tested me and put me on medications that would help my situation (Seroquel XR 200mg as a mood stabilizer (It is a miracle drug that has numerous uses for tons of different conditions) and Lexapro for an antidepressant. Flash forward 1 1/2 years and here I am. Medications have changed slightly, still on seroquel and have no idea how I slept for the 20 years before it. Wellbutrin is my new antidepressant and it completely kills the craving to ever have a cigarette ever again, amazing! anddd here's the catch, Adderall XR for none other than ADHD. I am college graduate and yes their may be a recession occurring within our time, but frankly ever since the day I was put on medication, I honestly was given a new lease on life, a true second chance! I know that if I can put up with Bipolar disorder/adhd/depression unmedicated for 20 years, I can absolutely accomplish anything in this world, sky is the limit. If you find yourself self medicating with pot/cigarettes/alcohol/and other drugs, truly ask yourself, what is the reason I am doing this to myself, for there is always a reason. It took me reaching absolute rock bottom to realize my reason, but it doesn't have to for you. Even in the last few years knowledge of medication has improved ten fold. They know more now about mental health conditions then say 10 years ago when they new nothing. Everyone is different and it will take time to find your perfect balance of medication. Figure that you are willing to be patient with the process because afterall unlike the SAT's, these meds can prepare you for the rest of your life. There are a lottttt of people that give up way to easily thinking that a certain medication didn't work therefore none will work. Medication can do 50% of the work. The other half comes down to personal willpower, you can't expect to get better overnight, it is a process of day by day taking one step at a time. From my empathetic heart, best of luck turning your lives around, it is never to late, NEVER, to improve the quality of your life forever. Learn from my experience. For all you pot smokers out there, I feel ya. I thought weed was helping my anxiety, but in reality it was making it worse/ and creating even more problems. Like alcohol, Smoking pot on a regular basis can seriously damage your chemical balance of your lovely brain. The weed of today ain't no dirt from the 60's, hell its not even dro anymore, it is extremely powerful. Let the medication do its job. If you want to smoke, I can't say I encourage it because even though I may think it gets a bad reputation due to ignorance. You can get in serious situations with the law, which will impede your road to your new life tremendously. Be smart, everything in moderation/nothing and I can't emphasize this more,NOTHING while driving any type of automobile. Especially don't sell marijuana. Selling weed, as easy as the money is, is the number one easiest way to get seriously busted being that it is so prevalent and available. Also there are always people out there who themselves have been busted and are now on the laws side in order to help their situation. Be smart
  • Because I'm lonely.
  • Because you touch yourself at night.
  • I don't because it's GROSS!
  • I don't. It's bad for your health, it makes you stink, and it offends most people, so I gave it up, and I'd glad I did. I couldn't afford to buy cigs at today's prices!
  • ...because BANANAS--won't stay lit? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
