Undersea cables actually are one method by which Internet data is transmitted across oceans: "First, they [data] are converted into a digital code and transmitted via low-energy radio signals to the nearest antenna site before being converted into the electrical and optical signals that continue the journey along the network of copper wires, coaxial cable and optical fiber that webs the North American continent. These signals plunge beneath the Atlantic Ocean, traverse continental shelves, and curve along the ocean floor before emerging on the European continent and weaving their way along another tangled network until once again transmitted via radio signal to another mobile phone. Undersea cable is a vital link in this global communication chain. Although satellites are another means of making the long-distance global connection, they have proven to be more expensive and less reliable than undersea cable.
