There are two major network technologies for cellular phone communications: TDMA, which stands for Time Division Multiple Access, and CDMA, which stands for Code Division Multiple Access. Verizon Wireless uses a CDMA network.
CDMA Definition
CDMA lets all callers linked to a particular cell tower have access to the entire communication frequency range at all times. The calls are kept separate by giving each call a code number.
Evolving Standard
The CDMA standard is an evolving one. As the standard evolves, it allows faster data rates and lets Verizon add additional features to the network, including video and music services.
V Cast
Verizon took advantage of the evolution of its CDMA network to develop the V Cast broadband multimedia service.
Users Per Tower
Verizon's CDMA network has no pre-set limit to the number of users on a given cell tower. More users can be added until the tower determines that call quality would decrease below an acceptable standard.
Network Reliability
Verizon's CDMA network has multiple redundancies to ensure quality service. Each facility has battery backup and all switching facilities and many cell towers have their own generators.
