Trade schools, also known as vocational or technical schools, are a good option for students who want career training but don't want to spend four years in college getting an advanced education.
Definition
A trade school is a school which teaches skills for future careers, says Princeton University. Students generally attend trade schools after high school, but some high schools teach courses leading to certification in a specific skill.
Classes
A student at a trade school generally takes only classes related to the trade he or she is studying. A student who wanted to become a motorcycle mechanic would not need to take English literature or European history.
Skilled Trade Schools
Trade schools are available for all skilled trades, including auto mechanics; welding; and heating, ventilation and air condition (HVAC). Trade-schools.net maintains a list of trade schools and the fields they cover on its website.
Other Trades
Other trade schools prepare students to be chefs, graphic designers or IT professionals, according to careeradvantage.org.
Study Time
It can take anywhere from nine months to two years to earn certification in a specific trade. Some skilled trades may also require an apprenticeship.
