  • For many years Kodak has been a popular maker of cameras, printers, scanners and other computer equipment. Choosing a Kodak printer for your printing needs can be a smart move, and when properly maintained those printers should be able to provide many years of trouble free service. Even so, it is important for printer owners to know how to troubleshoot their machines and fix common problems. Enabling bi-directional support can be an excellent way to troubleshoot and resolve printer and communication problems.

    Check Printer Communication

If your printer is not functioning properly it is important to test it and make sure you have good communication with the unit. Under most circumstances bi-directional support will not be needed to send a test page to the printer, or to print from your favorite program. To make sure your printer is communicating properly click on the "Start" button, choose "Control Panel" from the menu and then click "Printers and Faxes." Right-click on the printer, choose "Properties" and click the "Print Test Page" button.

    Check Bi-Directional Support

If you do need to enable bi-directional support on your Kodak printer, your first step should be to click on the "Start" button and choose "Control Panel" from the menu. Double-click on the "Printers and Faxes" icon and right-click the Kodak printer. Choose the "Ports" tab and look at the "Enable Bi-directional Support" check box.

    Enable Bi-Directional Support

Check the status of your Windows firewall. You may need to disable the firewall in order for bi-directional support to work properly. To turn off the firewall click on the "Start" button and choose "Control Panel" from the menu. Double-click the "Windows Firewall" icon and disable it. Then click on the "Printers and Faxes" icon, right-click on your Kodak printer and select the "Ports" tab. Click the checkmark next to the "Enable Bi-directional Support" option.
