The term greenware has several definitions. It was originally used to describe a form of pottery. However, as concerns for the environment have increased over the years, greenware has taken on new meanings, referring to specific products that are considered eco-friendly.
Ceramics
In pottery, greenware refers to pieces of clay that have been molded and allowed to dry to the point that they are "leather hard" but have not been fired in the kiln.
Qualities
Ceramic greenware is much more fragile than fired pottery. It will break if dropped and will return to the state of raw clay if it gets wet.
Software
In software, greenware is a license that allows you to use a computer program provided that you help the environment. Ways of helping the environment include recycling and using recycled products.
Example
Mr. Fridge is a software company that includes a green license, requiring its users to "take action against climate change or pollution."
Drinking Cups
Greenware is also a line of disposable plastic drinking cups derived from plants. Greenware cups are compostable in municipal or industrial facilities.
