Wireless Internet is easy and inexpensive to set up. Once installed, however, you may notice a distinct lack of range, especially in larger homes. Extending your wireless Internet range is usually not difficult once you understand its underlying causes.
Low Height
Wireless routers are essentially radios. As with radio towers, height is essential for transmission distance, so try placing the router near the ceiling or in the attic.
Walls and Other Barriers
Radio waves don't travel well through walls. Thicker walls block radio waves more, as do walls made of concrete or cinder blocks.
Lack of Extenders
Wireless extenders are connected to the router by Ethernet cable and transmit in a different location in the house. With wireless extenders, coverage can be extended across floors and distant rooms.
Factory Firmware
Factory original firmware for routers operates in "safe" ranges for power. Popular wireless routers have firmware hacks posted online that will increase power and range.
Inadequate Antenna
A variety of homemade or aftermarket antennas can boost range.
