  • It's just a name. A very odd, strange name.
  • That name is stupid and brilliant at the same time. The fact that you are making posts to the entire world mentioning them ( I have yet to make a post about my local Safeway), shows the method to their madness. AWful, but memorable name.
  • There is a little nursery rhyme you say to tots, the last two lines of which are "this little pig went to market this little pig stayed home" While you say the rhyme you touch the baby's toes. So...wiggly piggly..a wiggly toe, pig who goes to market. It's a natural! :)
  • I didnt know there were Piggly Wiggly's outside the south to be honest xD It just seems like....a southern appealing thing only >>
  • woooooooooow...... idk but thats really really funny! Ask the manager....
  • I have absolutely no idea... and yes, I've always wondered the same thing. I also wonder that about Cracker-Barrell, that's just a white racist joke waiting to happen.
  • I think they don't want you to.
  • All right, this bothered me until I had to look it up. According to the Piggly Wiggly website: Saunders' reason for choosing the intriguing name Piggly Wiggly ® remains a mystery; he was curiously reluctant to explain its origin. One story is that he saw from a train window several little pigs struggling to get under a fence, and the rhyming name occurred to him then. Someone once asked him why he had chosen such an unusual name for his organization, and Saunders' reply was, "So people will ask that very question." He wanted and found a name that would be talked about and remembered.
  • It has you thinking about it. Discussing it with others, You can't buy that kind of advertising
  • Consider where the stores are located and you'll have your answer Them hicks in the sound can't handle big words like Publix or Stop & Shop
  • Advertising is the name of the game here. Piggly Wiggly. the name is catchy and it rhymes. You asked this question and thats exactly what the advertising people want you to do. You remember Piggly Wiggly because its catchy. You will remember Piggly Wiggly the next time you go to the grocery store. Slick advertising is the name of the game.
  • Intentional retardism. Just like the Mendtos commercials. They might be ridiculously stupid but people sure do remember them.
  • Here's what I found at http://www.pigglywiggly.com/cgi-bin/customize?aboutus.html "Saunders' [the founder, Clarence Saunders] reason for choosing the intriguing name Piggly Wiggly ® remains a mystery; he was curiously reluctant to explain its origin. One story is that he saw from a train window several little pigs struggling to get under a fence, and the rhyming name occurred to him then. • I just love the name and want to go in one because of the name! The name makes it feel like a happy place to me!
  • There is a grocery chain in the south, called Publix. I constantly see it as Pubix. Now THERE is a name for a food store.
  • I've wondered that myself! Never been inside of one, though. In the midwest we have convenient stores named "Kum & Go". What are they thinking!? I've never been in one of those stores, either. I always wondered if their floors were sticky, though...lol.
  • Its much better than the original........Harry Wiggler........
  • Because it's easy to remember.
  • Easy to remember and it is catchy.
  • You telling me you've never shopped at the The Pig? (or the Piggle Wiggle as my kids called it) I think it's a regional chain which started in Tennessee. It was America's first self-service grocery store. Up until that time (early 1900s) people gave their list to an employee who gathered their items for them.
  • Why name a convenience store WAWA?
