  • I would have warned them before they broke through the doorway. Anyone who is breaking through a door poses a very legitimate threat to you and your family and you have no idea what their intent is. I might fire to kill or possibly to wound. The idea would be to stop them in their tracks. I would make positive identification before firing to ensure I'm not about to fire on a family member or friend. Ultimately I would not regret firing based on my family's safety and the circumstances surrounding their entry.
  • Shoot to mame, but knowing my luck I'd be completley off and shoot the doorframe instead! Quite squeamish when it comes to blood, guts and gore, so I think I might have issues with shooting another person, even if I needed to
  • Ready....Fire....Aim!
  • I would warn them and if he made even the slightest move id shoot out his knee cap.
  • I would aim low at the door and fire before they entered. I would then warn them to back-off, and that the next round will be aimed higher. Waiting for them to get in makes no sense whatsoever.
  • I have a Mossberg Defender for such occasions, and would fire as soon as they entered. The first round is heavy dove load, if losing several layers of skin doesn't convince them to leave the rounds that follow will be 00 buckshot.
  • Warn them once then shoot to kill if they didn't immediately retreat. Unfortunately criminals have sucsessfully sued people who wounded them in in self defense even when the person was justified in the shooting by law. Dead guys can't sue you.
  • Legally, you'll want to "shoot to stop the threat." To me, personally, that means two to the chest, one to the head. Just be careful that your state doesn't subscribe to the "duty to retreat" doctrine.
  • I'd shoot and hope to hit. I wouldn't warn. All I know is that they are criminals. I don't know if they're the kind who want my TV, or the kind who want to kill my entire family, and I wont wait to find out. I'd hope I could do it unwaveringly, but I don't know if that would be possible. I know there's cases of people getting scared and shooting loved ones. I'd wait until I could see who they were.
  • This actually happened to me. I had an old M1 Carbine my dad fished out of Naples Bay at the end of WWII. One night, a bunch of teens started carrying on in the street outside my duplex. They were hooting and hollering. Someone threw a rock and broke out the street light. Suddenly, I heard the door to the duplex open then shortly after, a young man opened the unlocked door to my apartment. I had been sitting on the couch facing the door with the rifle in my lap. I just leveled it at him. If he had have been armed or made a move to get a weapon, I would have unloaded the full clip at him. Fortunately, he just said, "Oops, wrong apartment." and withdrew quickly, closing the door behind him. Within less than a minute all the hooting and hollering had stopped and the street was empty.
  • Warn them, if they didn't stop, go for the leg. If they died, I could probably be emotionally fine for the first few minutes, after that, it's nightmares for years. I could never deal with having to kill someone.
  • Warn, and if necessary, shoot. Mame or kill probably won't even cross my mind.
  • ill warn them i dont really want to hurt them or kill them
  • I would loose my German Shepard on the intruder then call the cops and have the intruder hauled away and yes I would definitely press charges.
  • With my gun aimed at them, i would first give a warning, and if they took a single step forward after the warning, i would shoot them in the right shoulder, just below the collarbone, and i would do so without a moment of hesitation.
  • Why not warn the before they intrude? Could be "wrong apartment" like it was for "Jim in a Nautilus COAT." I had a drunk guy insist my apartment was theirs. I called up the police after my friends and I had taken him down. He called later to apologize.
  • I would warn them before they entered. If they proceeded, then I would shoot to maim, preferably in a limb or maybe a hand or foot if I had precise aim. If I were to be sued, I think I could hold up my end in court and I would rather lose money than take someone's life, even if that person is a degenerate loser. Then again, I could always sue them for trauma. Your home being forcibly invaded and being forced to shoot a human being to defend yourself under the possibility of attack is no psychological walk in the park.
  • shoot! shoot to kill too you don't to just wound them and them be able to get to their weapon and hurt/kill you! If anything or anyone threatens my family- no questions asked or warnings given= they're done for!
  • In most of the States in the USA you don't need a license to have a standard semiautomatic or bolt action rifle (if the barrel is 16" long or longer), pump or semiauto shotgun (with an 18" barrel or longer), or semi auto handgun or revolver. Anyway, I'd open fire, aiming for the chest, neck, or head. And yes, I could do it unwaveringly.
  • one warning to lay down on the floor and wait for the cops and IF they did not comply shoot to kill and keep shooting until the job is done ... ~Nemo~
  • Maim, I suppose, but I'd imagine I'd be so panicky that I wouldn't really be thinking about that.
  • Id blow their knees off.
  • Here in the United States I have a right to posses a firearm, I only need and have a License to Carry Firearms so that I can carry concealed. Most likely the only warning would be audible. 'BANG' 'BANG' 'BANG' "Stop or I'll shoot!!!"
  • I would not shoot to kill, for I know I would be in prison for it.I have no right to kill another, especially morally.I would warn them, and tell them I have a gun.I would logically realize they were in my place to rob me,not to hurt me.Even if they proceeded forward I would not shoot, but would warn them again.
  • break in my house, endanger my family, theyre dead
  • I own a 45 mag, am licensed, I go to the shooting range 2 times a week, and the one who shoots first lives to see another day.
  • If someone breaks into my home, they gave up all their rights to any warnings. I'm there to protect my wife and child, so I'd put a bullet in their head in an instant.
  • being a former combat Marine i would have no qualms about killing some SOB breaking into my house.
  • I would shoot to kill, someone could EASILY harm me. I am 4 foot 11 inches and about 96 pounds. One good slap can knock me down. If they opened the door I couldn't guatantee that they would still be standing there because my pit bull is very aggressive towards intruders and would probably go for the neck of the intruder. But if she knows the person and the scent, she would calmly walk up to the person and give them a warm welcome. So I would wait and see how my dog reacts to see if I would shoot or not...
  • If they broke into my home and were in my house, they can kiss their a$$ goodbye. I'm not taking the chance of them kiling me. If they had the balls to come through my door, they could very well have the balls to kills me.
  • The minute they stepped into my house and I noticed he was armed, he would be a dead man. If he was not carrying a weapon, I would hold him at gunpoint until the police arrived. If he ran out the door, I would not shoot him but report the breaking. If you shoot somebody, even if he was in your house, but he turned and started to run out the door and you shot him, you may have to have a jury decide your future. Only when you feel threatened for your life, him coming at you and you shot him would be a good case of instant justice and killed him in self defense. Any other way and you have a lot of explaining to do.
  • I would shoot him in the head then tape a note on him saying: I am a theif and drop him off in the middle of a highway.
  • My family and I have been victimized too many times when I wasn't there. I'd shoot for the chest, neck, and forehead. I can live with the result.
  • Shoot to maim, most likely. Depends on how they were armed, how far I was from the doorway, alot of variables. It also depends on how shaky my hands were. Even the bravest people would probably have shaky hands in that situation.
  • Say hello to my little friend!
  • Don't have to wait for them to enter in texas. If they are trying to break in shoot to kill
  • Both shooting to kill and shooting to 'stop' an intruder seem reasonable to me. It is a question between choosing total safety and killing or less than total safety and letting another human being live. . For myself I prefer the more tribal idea that there is no defense like a good dead body, but I can respect the other view and personally wouldn't like the possibility of being haunted by having killed someone. . So a warning, that if unheeded would mean death for this intruder. I can only hope I could do it without hesitation as I haven't had any practice.
  • I would warn them. Then shoot them in the knee or ankle. If they had a weapon though and were coming after me or my family, I'd probably kill them -- but that would be the last resort.
  • Considering I have children in the home, it would be shoot to kill to prevent harm (mental, emotional, and phyical) to my children. Would not think twice about it, and I would not warn them. Did they warn me before entering my home?
  • I'd warn them before they got in, and once they continued to break in, I'd shoot them dead center of the chest, knowing that I have a wife and two kids to protect.
  • I would shoot and hope for the best. Unwaveringly? I'd probably pee my pants!
  • Shoot to kill no way im giving a crimminal a chance to sue me for shooting him while he was breaking in and stealing my stuff .
  • A warning shot before they got into the house--then, if the persist and get into the house--shoot to kill.
  • Yesterday I absentmindedly got off at the wrong floor and opened the unlocked door of a stranger's apartment. Luckily, he wasn't ready to shoot to kill, and so after an embarrassed apology on my part, we agreed to have a drink upstairs in my own apartment. Lucky me, I guess. I hope that no one accidentally goes into anyone's apartment who is ready and anxious to have an excuse to blow someone's head off. If you want to have a gun then you have a responsibility to use it carefully.
  • If they have a weapon in their hands then I would shoot to kill, if not then I would warn them, tell them to put their hands in the air and phone the police. If it was the former then I could do it no problem, if I killed someone accidently then I would be wracked with guilt for the rest of my life, but if I killed someone in a me- or- them situation then it would have as much effect on me as killing a wasp does, in other words none at all.
  • I would shoot to stop, whatever that took. If they kept holding on their gun, that isn't considered stopping. If I could, I would call 911 first and let them know what is about to occur. Talk about getting the police there fast!
  • I live in Florida and we don't need a license to possess a firearm. Once they open my door, my warning will be the sound of me cocking the hammer, if they don't head that warning, the next sound they might hear is the sound of the hammer falling. I shoot to kill.
  • i would shoot to maim no warning why let them get away to hurt someone else.
  • If my children were in the house. I would lock them in their rooms and tell them to call the police and NOT COME OUT NO MATTER WHAT. Then...I would shoot the sonfoabitch smack dead in the center of his forehead. Kick his ass and probably set him on fire absolutely unwaveringly. But.. If they were not home. I would beat him with my bat first... Then shoot him, then set him on fire. I would dance around the corpse like Rumplefreakingstilskin!
  • Shoot to kill. I already know what the intruders intentions are what I don't know is how far they will go. I will not die from the lack of shooting back.
