Well. . .if I was in a BAD area and felt uncertain about asking a complete stranger for directions, I'd probably call the police; using their NON-emergency number, of course! Otherwise, I'd pull into a filling station and ask them for help !

It used to happen all the time. I have no sense of direction. I'd stop and ask directions. Now, I have a gps. +5

I try to make damn sure I know where I'm going before I get there. Usually I mapquest the directions and write them down in VERY simple terms (left on main st, right on 121st, etc.) Unfortunately my boyfriend gives very bad directions so when he is directing me somewhere I get directions like, "turn before the big hill" and and "take a left after the yellow house." Ugh. It drives me nuts.

I'm a guy. I don't get lost.

When I was younger, being from Indiana (Lafayette), I had a philosophy about that: "It is impossible to be lost in Indiana as long as you have half a tank of gas." This is because no matter where I was in Indiana, I had enough gas to find a landmark SOMEWHERE which would get me home. A major highway or interstate will present itself if you drive in one direction long enough, and from there it's just a matter of picking the right direction and going home. Beyond that, I keep an atlas in my car at all times. And I got my wife a Garmin GPS for Christmas last year, so she gets to play with the high-tech stuff as well. And I'm not afraid to stop and ask directions, too. Oh, yeah...I always keep 20-40 bucks somewhere in my car for emergency gas funds. Just in case!
