  • It means that he has someone he'd rather be with than you, but if it doesn't work out, he wants to make sure doesn't have to sleep alone until the next best thing comes along. Write him off and find someone worth your love.
  • He just wants to make sure he has you to fall back on if a new relationship does not work out. He is not mature enough to be your boyfriend! Let him go.
  • He's trying to have the best of everything... keep you in the background in case something new doesn't work out. That is not fair to you at all. I don't think you should remain in contact with him so that it is easier to get over him.
  • he's trying to keep you on the shelf - suggest all or nothing - either of those would be better than sitting on someone's shelf
  • If he wants to be friends and you have no problem with that, then that's cool. However, to make the statement he wants to keep hope alive, is bullcrap. What he is saying is he wants to go out and do what he wants to, but desires to basically keep you on a string, so if things don't work out for him, he has you as a backup. He is taking advantage of your feelings. If you want to be friends great, but in terms of staying friends for a future relationship, it is better for you to move on because the guy obviously has some character issues.
