  • I think it helps them digest their food.
  • Cryptonium is exactly right. Some birds eat seeds and insects that are very hard for them to digest, they swallow pebbles, stones or grit to grind the food in their stomachs to aid digestion. There is also a type of parrot whose diet is completley poison, they ingest a certain type of mud to counter act the poison.
  • Some grit is also eaten by birds for the calcium in it. It hardens their egg shells. If a bird has a calcium deficiency all sorts of nasty things can happen when they lay.
  • The specific location the grit is stored is within the gizzard. As mentioned in the other answers, it is an integral part of the digestion cycle.
  • It's Used in the gizzard to grind food
