  • I think he meant that stuff of the imagination was false and therefore visionaries were gulled by their own dreams/fantasies, thus 'lying' to themselves. He was a nihilist so he would have a negative take on such things. My opinion of it is that he was possibly a depressive and found refuge in a harsh reality that bordered on cynicism. Yet, if we're honest hope and imagination are but fantasies and can mislead us at times. However, I am a dreamer so I must be a liar to myself too.
