  • It wasn't that Nixon was shy, it was that he had something of an inferiority complex that manifested itself in his furtive behavior. Watergate aside, he wasn't a bad President, just one that was frustrated by his inability to bring about answer to the problems of the day. It was this frustration that led him to make his famous unannounced visit to a protest being held at the Washington Monument. One night, he just got up, told the Secret Service to mount up, and had himself driven to the Monument. When he got there, he walked up to some of the people camped out there and started talking with them.
