  • It can be a reaction to stress, whether it's nervousness, lying, pain, or a number of other factors. It can also be a result of an irritant in the air. If you're wearing too much perfume, you might see people around you blinking quite a bit.
  • No, it might be a sign of allergies or other medical condition or just a sign of stress, especially if you think that someone is trying to trap you into saying something that they can twist into something you didn't mean at all.
  • It could be. But I don't think it's a definite thing. I have heard that when people lie they often look to the left.
  • No. For signs of lying look at the ears. They will turn red when a person is doing some serious lying.
  • I found this to be interesting. Blinking Blinking is a neat natural process whereby the eyelids wipe the eyes clean, much as a windscreen wiper on a car. Blink rate tends to increase when people are thinking more. This can be an indication of lying as the liar has to keep thinking about what they are saying. Realizing this, they may also force their eyes open and appear to stare. Blinking can also indicate rapport, and people who are connected often blink at the same rate. Someone who is listening carefully to you is more likely to blink when you pause (keeping eyes open to watch everything you say). Beyond natural random blinking, a single blink can signal surprise that the person does not quite believe what they see ('I'll wipe my eyes clean to better see'). Rapid blinking blocks vision and can be an arrogant signal, saying 'I am so important, I do not need to see you'. Rapid blinking also flutters the eyelashes and can be a coy romantic invitation. http://changingminds.org/techniques/body/parts_body_language/eyes_body_language.htm I have to ask, was John McCain your inspiration for this question?
  • it can be but i wouldn't base any big assumption on it
  • ...I find the pupils darken & dilate a bit...they also look a bit "dead"...this is from my experience with students lying...but damn...didn't work for me with my ex...I believed every word he said...but then, I ignored the eyes & just believed my heart.
  • I think so. It's very hard to look at someone in the eyes when you are lying.
  • Happens if someone is wearing lenses or something has gone in the eye! You cannot definately say that he is lying!
  • Depends if it is not their normal "blink rate." All have a sub conscience tell if lying. You are creating and/or recalling a thought that takes concentration, albeit for a second, and it is a distraction. The tell comes out as a distracter. Neurolinguistics is a better method of telling someone is not being truthful.
  • I think not keeping eye contact and turning the head away is more of a sign of lying. They say an honest person looks up while their answering your questions and a liar looks down.
  • That totally depends on the moment and the situation and the person. You can get someone into a lot of trouble trying to be an FBI agent using those techniques without training. These little signs all tie in with heart beat, blood pressure and breathing patterns, words, gestures and signs all working in conjunction with one another not only one thing. For petes sake! I shudder to think how many people are accused of lying just because they have a nervous tick?
  • It could be considered lying, but it could be contacts or they are on some kind of drug or they might just have some weird disorder
  • I used to question my boyfriend of 3 years, just to see if he was telling the truth. I had all these theories where i'd check his heartbeat and check his palms when I was asking the questions. I did find though that everytime I would ask these questions he would blink constantly and try and make a joke out of what I was saying. Not so long back, me and this guy split up as i found out he was a serial cheater!, maybe the worst I've ever come across! So I think there is some truth in there somewhere.
  • yeah or they simply have rapidly blinking eyes??
  • Only through perception, due to years of being a pathological liar, can one truly pick up on every untruth.
  • I do not think so. It could be just an involuntary action which does not signify anything. I do not want to read too much into rapidly blinking eyes.
  • They may have a nervous tick!
  • Not necessarily. It could be just they're nervous juat talking to you. I read an article as to how to tell if someone is lying to you - I'm sure you can find it on Google under, "Body language of liars"...something to that effect.
  • No, it's a sign of dry, irritated eyes.
  • No! they could have something irritating their eye or they could have a neujrological tick
  • No it means they're tired or they've got some sort of eye irritation, or they're crazy.
  • I think looking away and not making eye contact is more indicative that someone is lying to you, not rapidly blinking eyes.
  • No, but if they look down to the left or their eyes dart around than that is a sign of lying.
  • Yes there are things such as blinking that give away liars but each person has an obvious give away sign that is different and you only realise what it is when you realy know them.
  • Only in combination with other indicators. And even *then*, it's difficult to be certain.
  • sign of nervousness or drug use
  • Someone likes you or is persuading you do something.
  • No. There are no absolutes.
  • Nope..Now if the person is doing this while constantly glancing off or avoiding making eye contact with me..I tend to think they are lying to me :)
  • Could be a blocked tear duct! Merry Christmas, Grammy.
  • Maybe not lying but nervous none the less.
  • Not really!
  • I'm not certain about that. I have heard though that if someone continually looks to the left while they are talking to you that they are lying. I don't know how true that is though:)
  • surveys state that rapid blinking and the rubbing of a persons nose are clear signs they are lying!!
  • Not necessarily, but perhaps.
  • I dunno some cant go without smiling if their lying so its possible
  • absolutely, I know many experts say that rapidly blinking eyes are a sign of lying or either not divulging all the info. I think even the FBI uses this type of body language to determine lying. Along with the fact that if you ask a question and they look off to the right, they are lying.
