AVG if you have the 8.0 version then you don't have to worry about updating it, as it will do its Job all on its own, scans, updates and puts virus in vault and empties it all by its self and its a spyware as well

Worms can get on your computer if you leave it outside on wet soil. AVG Free can do nothing about it.

Well, on a more serious note, AVG Free is capable of detecting worms in your computer. Worms can infect your system from just about any harmful website and e-mail that contains it.

- I ask such a remedial question because ive had AVG since i got my computer a year ago and tonight i downloaded a file and my computer like...made an odd noise and slowed down drastically.
  BUT when i ran my AVG 8.0 free edition, it shows my computer is virus and problem free =/

- Unfortunately, not all worms can be detected by AVG Free (or by other virus programs for that matter). Worms, trojans, etc. are constantly being created -- probably faster than antivirus programmers can create a diagnostic and a cure.
  
  You may want to check the Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) to see if a lot of RAM is being consumed. If a lot of RAM is being consumed (more than what you usually use), then there probably is a virus or a worm causing it. In that case, you may have to check your registry if something is amiss.
  
  If RAM is not the problem, then it probably has something to do with your hardware.
  
  Furthermore, constantly update your AVG database.
  
  And lastly, avoid downloading files from questionable sites.

- Hrrm...no my ram is fine, i suppose i'll clean out my cookies and check my registry.
  I try to use the internet safely, but i like Lime wire, which is not the best thing =/

AVG has a new version that can detect worms.

It can scan any file that enters your computer from the web or a USB device or wherever so it'll prevent any new ones from getting in in the future.

It also has features that will scan links on pages before you click them - so it helps prevent you from even being on a harmful page.
