The two words can be used to express the same emotion, however sympathy has a wider range of emotions which it can cover. See: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/pity and http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sympathy
-
Pity is just feeling sorry for someone. Sympathy is having experienced what it is there going though,so in a way sympathy is the more intimate of the two.
-
They do overlap. Pity means feeling sorry for someone even if you do not share their pain. Sympathy is having gone through that pain, you feel pity.
-
Pity is when you kind of look down on someone while you feel sorry for them. Sympathy is letting someone know you're there, and you share their bad times with your heart.
