spreading lies about the opposition is a requirement for being an American politician! They all do it, they always have, they always will...they are, after all, politicians.

They get elected by their adoring fans! :(

I ran three times for city councilman. I refused to say any lies, twists, distortions, or that thing where one would say "My opponent thinks..." My opponent, the incumbant each time, didn't actually lie about me, but got the truth so twisted that I oculdn't, and wouldn't deny them to be a lie, but it wasn't exactly yhe truth. Besides, since a district councliman in a small city really has no authority to overturn Roe v. Wade or appoint Supreme Court Justices, I didn't believe it was a matter of issue to be discussed. I wanted to focus on which roads need to be repaired and the such. I lost, big, all three times. Oh, and I ran the campaign using only my own money, didn't accept money or the such from any outside sources.

The problem is not the punishment they may or may not receive. The problem is proving that they committed slander. There are no many did they do this this way or that way. If they did it this way, it's alright. The laws are written to let them get away with anything.

If they are spreading lies they should be jailed go to court and if found guilty punished to the fullest extent of the law.

They should be found guilty of slander. But, considering how many do this, IF they would try them and find them guilty....where in the world would we jail them? There wouldn't be enough room!!

When a politician is caught spreading lies on what ever there is no legal punishment unless the rival candidate takes him to court which seems to be a loss of time. The best and only punishment for any running politician comes from the people, DON'T VOTE vote for the liar or the slanderer.

At the very least, they should be charged for perjury (hey, worked against Martha Stewart!) and/or libel and slander

The least important factor is how many or what lies are said about an opponent, the background problem is that our ignorant fellow Americans believe it all and have no mind of their own to research or find out what is the truth and nothing but the truth. Police then went to the Cherry Creek Hotel in Denver, about four miles from INVESCO Field, to pursue Shawn Robert Adolph, 33, who was already wanted on numerous warrants. Adolph jumped out of a sixth floor hotel window, breaking an ankle, and was arrested. During that course, Geisel allegedly told another attendee, "That nigger, if he gets elected, I'll assassinate him myself." There was an audience member that yelled out that Obama was a ''terrorist'' and when prompted by McCain, about what they should do, someone yelled out ''kill him''. They are inciting assassination of his character, but I think that they would be happy if one of their fanatics would do the job for them. This is so irresponsible and the news media should be reporting these incidents. I attended that event in ABQ and I was appalled, but because of the crowd frenzy, I was afraid of speaking up in the face of this crowd who were more unified on their mutual hatred of Obama. They are encouraging ''hatred'' and in a race that has the first successful black man on the ballot, this is a horrible situation. I am praying for the safety of Obama, but I will never vote for McCain.
