Some manufacturers want to kill the name laptop, because they are not safe to use on a lap. The heat emitted from the bottom of a powerful portable computer can be enough to damage the body - one man half-cooked his penis.

Originally notebooks were used to describe the smaller laptops but now they're interchangable really. You may find people using notebook more often because of the medical problems associated with using a computer on your lap for a long period of time.
