  • One car, hubby walks to work and I stay home. HE washer and clothes line for good weather. I only use the dryer when I can't hang clothes. We don't use hair dryers. We wash dishes by hand in two dishpans. We've heavily insulated the house and have a 90+% efficient furnace. We don't have AC. We grow a garden and put up a lot of the food. We buy other foods locally where we can. I cook in a crockpot much of the time, although I need to get a new one right now as my old one cracked.
  • We built our house in a rather green way, high efficiency, very insulated, radiant floors, wood stove with catalytic converter. We cut our wood from our own property or a neighbors, thinning the forest for it's benefit. We chip the small stuff to keep it in the forest. We only turn on our hot water or floor heat as we need it, like just 15 minutes before we need it. It will stay hot for hours, and no pilot light needed then. All cooking water I use on my plants. We use one car and that only rarely or in the winter. My husband uses a motorbike to get to work. We don't buy products in lots of packaging and I will email those companies we choose not to buy from and let them know why. We only have about one small bag of garbage each week. We compost all kitchen type garbage, recycle what we can, and it's just this little pile. We don't have A/C. We hang our clothes to dry, even in the winter, I can hang them in front or above the wood stove. We cook on that a lot during the winter, too. We use minimal task lighting. We unplug from the walls, many of our appliances so they aren't on standby.
  • i bike and walk most of the time. i take public transport (metro/bus) almost everywhere else. all the windows in my new house are being replaced with highly energy-efficient windows. the windows were strategically placed for maximizing passive solar gain and cross breezes. i plan on installing automatic motorized smart blinds which open little by little every hour and close likewise based on the position of the sun. the r-factor in all the insulation is much higher than required by the building codes, plus i am installing nasa developed radiant barrier technology for even more heating and cooling efficiency. i chose a very light-colored roof. i will be installing solar panels on the roof of my home. i dont use the ac, i use a fan instead. i dont heat the home very much instead i put a heating pad under my feet on cold days and dress warmly. i dont use the dishwasher. all the appliances are energy star certified. i do things manually (e.g. open cans whereas others use an appliance). the hot water heater is insulated. i have smart power strips that cuts the power to appliances completely when theyre not in use so theres no draw. i use cfl bulbs. i turn off lights when im not in the room. i recycle and buy post-consumer recycled products. i buy from farmer markets and from local suppliers whenever possible. i dont buy new clothes anymore, i buy them at vintage stores or at thrift shops (except for underwear & shoes, i cant compromise there!). i compost. and i dont water or treat my lawn.
