If you have complete belief and faith in your ideals, ideas & promises - would you need another by their personal character to persuade the majority to trust in yours - is this not a con & a point of doubt within your own word? - why do politicians do it?

If a politician can gain the confidence of the people by truth before any ellection, by his or her own merit >>>> Why use anothers support to gain you the position when it may not be you that the people favor? ... Does that not mean you are not really the person for the job ... as it is not your presence or word the majority sees and hears? Its like having a really crappy business ... Yet place a few bikini clad girls out front, and the customers will come regardless of getting bad service. Politics really is the worlds biggest con indeed. ;)
