My first thought is that it is a corruption of the more crude SH*T HAPPENS. This is a form of fatalism, where you are being told that it doesn't really matter what you try to do to avoid something, there is always the part you can forget that will result in ultimate failure. The golem in the gears, as it were. Deus Ex Machina. The spanner in the works.

I tend to view it as, "Life is what happens while you're sitting around making plans." :-)
