  • I dunno who said it. It's not without basis... it's just... well... useless. The trouble is it doesn't say anything about the real cause of the problem -- yes, we love power, and we don't trust love. But why? And what to do about those things? Those aren't the *root* of the problem, they're symptoms. So saying "when this symptom overwhelms that symptom, all will be well" doesn't add to our understanding or aspiration to act. One thing that both the love of power and the fear of love have in common is fear: those who love power hope to extinguish their fear with sufficient power, and those who fear love don't want to be overwhelmed or washed away by it's power. Fear is more fundamental to this equation, and even more fundamental than fear is the reason we're afraid: we see ourselves as separate from the whole of life -- helpless baubles in a hostile environment. That distorted understanding of what we are is the background in which the fear arises: it gives power it's attraction, and love its repellence. So a cool quote that captures that would be more useful. But I'm out of ideas at the moment.
  • Jimi Hendrix. Don't know if he was the original, but a quick G-search turned up his name.
  • The quote has been attributed to Jimi Hendrix, however, he may have gotten the idea for the quote from Sri Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, an Indian spiritual leader who had his height of fame in the US around the time Jimi Hendrix was famous as well. The quote verbatim from Sri Chinmoy's own website is: "When the power of love Replaces the love of power, Man will have a new name: God" I still haven't found the original source of the Hendrix quote, but it is very likely that he took this quote and put his own spin on it.
  • 1) Jimi Hendrix "When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will finally know peace. Jimi Hendrix" Source and further information: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/ "Attributed" "When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace." Source and further information: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix (This second reference saiys that the quote is *attributed* to Jimi Hendrix. Further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix 2) Here is a very similar quote: "We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace. William Gladstone" Source and further information: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Peace Further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Ewart_Gladstone 3) We probably need more love, and without this we won't be able to achieve peace, but we also need some power on our own lives. The power, which creates problems, is the power that some want to have on other people's lives.
  • IT REALLY DOES NOT MATTER WHO INITIATED AND CLOTHED THIS BEAUTIFUL THOUGHT WITH WORDS, IT HAS A STRONG RING OF TRUTH IN IT, TO WHICH MOST PEOPLE CAN RELATE. ALSO THERE ARE MANY SHADES OF MEANING TO THE WORD “LOVE”, RANGING FROM VARIOUS NEGATIVES SUCH AS “LUST”, TO A SEXUAL LOVE, THEN ON TO A SPIRITUAL AND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE AND BEYOND! NO DOUBT, THERE ARE MANY MORE INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHTS FROM WHERE THAT CAME; SOMEONE WILL SPONGE THEM UP AND REVEAL THEM TO HUMANITY. WHO THAT SOMEONE WILL BE DOES NOT REALLY MATTER. tony la spina
