  • Anyone taking an office for the US government should take their oath on a Christian Bible because the government was founded on Christian principles. If someone doesn't like that, they should leave the country for one that carries their beliefs. People who cannot uphold the ideals of the forefathers should not be accepting a governmental office.
  • These people and their oaths. Please. A bible is as good as anything. Here's why: If the person asking for the oath wants you to use a bible, go ahead. As the person taking the oath, you shouldn't care. You might as well be taking an oath on a loaf of bread. If you believe in the magical power of the bible, you might feel that if you don't do as you pledge, you well go to hell and all that. If you feel the bible is just another mediocre work of fiction, what's it going to harm if you pledge some lip service oath. You might as well just say, "cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye" or something like that.
  • In the United Kingdom you can take the oath on the holy book of your choice or not use any book at all.
  • I don't think we should force someone to swear on something they don't believe in. It would be like asking a Christian to swear on "the great ooga-balooga chronicles of brix'pa 7" If you don't follow it, who cares what someone is swearing against it. People should be allowed to swear into office on whatever holds the most value to them because that is what they hold THEMSELVES accountable to instead of what someone else WANTS them to be held accountable to. They aren't swearing that the answers are in the bible. They are swearing that they will tell the truth as they understand truth according to what they are swearing on.
  • In the USA you do NOT have to swear on a bible, has not been required for a long time. Too much TV and too little experience in real life.
  • I think here they can use what they wish or choose not to swear, but take an oath. The whole thing is rather silly to me. Like, -hey, promise not to anything bad or lie, okay? -Okay, I promise. -Cool.
