i'l celebrate when there is a black hole! the thing is, in the LHC, if it does create a black hole, it will be so small it will evaporate in a very short period of time, almost to fast for it to be detected. the sceptics give physicists too much credit when they dont need it and not enough when they do! We simply do not have the power to create a black hole that would destroy the earth! or create a wormhole for extra terrestrials to cross over and invade.

WOOHOO!! I heard about that. I don't think they're actually using it yet though, just powered it up. In October we find out if it's over.

This is very exciting stuff. I watched a one-hour special on the History Channel but other than that, I haven't seen much coverage here in the U.S. The BBC online and BBC News on the radio (on my local NPR station) has been covering the LHC at a more satisfying depth. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/default.stm

Is this that "6 billion dollar experiment" that was on youtube? I had a small fight with someone there who said "Please don't get me wrong, but Tell me, should countries invest Billions of their money on projects like this?.. I am no saying we should abandon science, all I am saying is there is more important things in this world than proving we can recreate the Big Bang, why should humans try to recreate it for? that is not going to help us cure fatal diseases or feed the poor is it? Humanity should use science for something better than just showing off that is all. But I respect your opinion" How would you respond to that? All I could tell him is that science is progressive and thats all I could think of....

All they have done is switched on the beam. There will not be any high-speed collisions taking place until on or about 21st October.

I'm VERY excited about this whole experiment. I know it's just the beginning, but I can't wait to find out the results!
-
... glad to see the planet is still here to wake up to ... yawn ... now lets see if we can actually get some amazing new lessons learned ...
-
If they wanted to create black holes, they should have just rammed Mick Jagger and Steve Tyler together while they were singing....LOLOL
-
<shakes head> There is a black hole, alright. Just check out the economy...
-
So far so could, though I would think it unwise to press our luck and try a more dangerous and complicated experiment. The scientists were on the edge of their seats in fear of this one.

I'll celebrate. But, I don't think man can make a real black hole in the universe.

I just watched this vid http://cdspages.web.cern.ch/cdspages/1120625.htm (yes, the whole damn thing! It WAS pretty interesting, though). It's about the safety of the LHC, and the guy explains a lot about the black holes. Apparently, the main purpose isn't to find black holes, but the reason behind mass. And, they haven't started colliding anything yet, today they merely turned it on, so to say. But, yeah, let's celebrate that everything went smooth ^^
