Alot of colleges around here Reccomend IBM Thinkpads by lenovo - very reliable, mine is great! you should buy off of ebay new - get a t61 or higher something with dual core and alot of ram, what's in the computer is more important than the brand alot of the time.

Check with your college to see if they might have special pricing/packaging with certain computer companies. I work at a major university in Texas and we have a special arrangement with Dell that comes with all the software that we have licensing to preloaded and everything at huge savings just for students.

Apple offers deals on their web page that make it the absolute best choice for college students -- the price can't be beat.

I can't speak for where to get it, because I don't know where you live and stores in Canada are a bit different than elsewhere. But I can say it is unfair to compare Dell, HP and Gateway to Apple, because they are quite different. Apples and Oranges, pardon the pun.

another thing to consider also is the weight, size of screen you want to look at. you going to want something with fairly large HD, 1-2G of RAM, Dual core if you can, many of them have built in web cam now, look at the software offered on them also. what ever brand you buy, pick up a cool-mat for use in your room and they even have chill-mat that are portable, this will extend the life of that investment. as heat is the enemy of a laptop. web sites to go look at them: Buy.com Newegg.com Tigerdirect.com amazon.com CDW.com JourneyedED.com for students & teachers only all have 800# after you look around web sites call ask questions and tell them what you need and want, and many laptops still come in XP so look around don't think you have to have Vista me personally I like HP, acer, Sony, Toshiba but thats just me as far as laptops. hope this helps.
