  • Just because they don't take care of themselves, doesn't mean that they don't know how to take care of you. The best family doctor I ever had was very over-weight.
  • I never thought about it-But you are absolutely correct !
  • I have NEVER had a doctor that was overweight or smoked for that matter... And because they don't... I found them to be obsessive, jugemental and rather rude. I didn't trust them what so ever... so even if they were... "incongruent," no... But they do take a hypocritic oath so... *heh heh...
  • I take it you are implying the inconstincy in that they tell you to lose weight and stop smoking. This is not due to a 'do as I say, not as I do' situation. This is due to the risk of lawsuits for malpractice if they do not tell you to lose weight or to stop smoking.
  • Yes I do, and in this country the nurses seem to be heavier and smoke more than the doctors on average.
  • In a way, yes. But they are just human and all of us have weakness and often do things we know are bad for us.
  • Pushing the boundaries of 'Do what I say, not what I do'.
  • Their job can be very, very stressful. Their decisions could determine whether someone lives or dies, so NO.
  • That doesn't bother me at all. But I'll tell you something weird. I had switched to my wife's doctor when we married, because she loved him and had been his patient all her life. He was a great doctor. One week-end, about 5 years after we got married, we went to the drugstore to pick up our Rx's and some knick-knacks. When we got to the pharmacist, he said "I can't fill these prescriptions"! We asked why ... and he asked if we had gotten a phone call at home. We said "No" and "Why" and he proceeded to tell us that our doctor had died of a massive coronary on Friday. He was "only" 53, but he smoked like a freight train, and always smelled like a "smelter" or some such, but he was one of the NICEST doctors I have ever had (and I have had plenty)! My wife just broke down "Bawl-ing" and I was just shocked. I didn't know they wouldn't fill Rx's if your Dr. dies. Weird!
  • YEAH! (What does "incongruent" mean?)
  • That never made sense to me. Someone telling you to lose weight and to stop smoking, while they eat fatty foods and smoke a pack a day. Shouldn't they listen to their own advice?
  • In certain fields like emergency medicine or surgery it is a extremely stressful environment where doctors/nurses/techs dont get to eat for hours and smoking is a way of relieving some stress or irritability. I personally will never smoke but can understand why doctors and other healthcare personal do it. The overweight thing always gets me, but always remember what my dad said "Do as a i say, not as i do".
  • I believe they have the information on how to live well, but they have not learned it(nobody wants to harm oneself, so they have it but they don't know it)
  • No, it makes a lot of sense. Some priests are pedophiles and some businessmen are scam artists... kind of goes with the territory.
  • I think the doctors rule nr.1 is "Do what I say and not what I do".
