The word is vetted. It basically means the in depth investigation of the candidates past. Analyzing all qualifications, experience, and (really just) looking for skeletons in the closet.

Vetted is a word. It means to be examined, like from a veterinarian, or vouched for. It's an in depth investigation into someone and their affairs to see if they will be clean or fit. It's like if you are going to buy a horse, you get it vetted beforehand to make sure that it's sound for what you want to use it for. Same for candidates, they get vetted to check for suitability of office, or to make sure they don't have horrid things that could come out of a closet or out from under a rug and look bad to others.

Could it be 'fetid' which means really foul smell? That's the only similar-sounding word I can think of.
