All banks are different. if you are a long-standing customer with your bank, some will go ahead and credit your account. others will not.
Also, if you have money in another account, say savings or a cd, some banks will make your check deposit, based on the savings or cd as a backup, in case the check bounces.
How long does it take for checks to clear with Lloyds?

When does a bank debit your checking account? I have online banking and paid a bill, it was sent out as a check, on Wednesday, 10/22/08 and was surprised to see it drawn out of my checking acct. That shouldn't be deducted till the check is cashed and back
