Do you think that it's a mistake that many public schools are no longer using the phonics method to teach children how to read and spell?

    YES! I learned that way, and I am AMAZED at how poorly the kids from the generations after me (I am 58) spell. There is alot to be said for "Hooked on Phonics."

    Or as the sweatshirt says, "Hooked On Fonicks Works For Me!"

    Yeah i used that and my brother didnt. Hes 12 and at a 5th grade level for reading im 17 and at a college freshman level. It does more than just regular lessons. Since he also didnt get it he has alot of speech problems too. That could be something else but phonics worked great when i was in elementary.

    They teach them how to read by rhyme like cat hat sat etc..It is strange. I teach mine by phonograms like bleanded letters and phonics.They are way more advanced in their reading and comprehension skills.Greek and Latin are a help as well by teaching them what words mean.

    Phonics are terribly important, especially to kids who fall behind in fluency around the 2nd and 3rd grades. Often it's the "missing link." Kids can't decode quickly if they don't know phonics to the point of automaticity. Too many are getting by on sight word knowledge until it's too late. By the time they get to content-critical reading, when they are "reading to learn," and teachers find out that they can't decode unfamiliar words, some kids are so far behind that there's almost no hope for them. I heard just today on the radio about schools (in New York?) where 12 and 13 year-olds are being taught phonics, becuase they made it all the way to middle school never having learned them!

    where i live, they went back to teaching phonics starting in the 1st grade for reading and spelling. My son - who is nearly deaf - actually picked up the phonics method by reading lips. Due to his hearing loss, we never thought he'd be able to do phonics, let alone that it would improve his vocabulary and speech. He amazed all of us and was reading the Harry Potter books by the summer between 1st and 2nd grade. His class was a pilot program in phonics and since they did so well, all of the elementary grades use phonics.
