Why was softball dropped from the Olympics?

I just heard the head of the IOC offer an answer. He said that baseball was dropped because of the chronic links to drug abuse in MLB and that, unfortunately softball was painted (unfairly he said) with the same bruch. He hopes it will return in 2016.

Softball was dropped from the Olympics because the U.S. team is overly dominant... The IOC covers it up with other excuses, but we all know the real reason..... Softball/baseball has a chance of coming back into the Olympics in 2016.... I sure hope it does. I'm 16 and my ultimate dream is to grow up and play for the U.S. National team, and since they took softball out of the olympics things have been tougher for me, but there still is hope for softball to get reinstated..... so keep your fingers crossed :]

The IOC thought the US team was dominating the event which is why it's funny that they didn't win this time round. The behind-the-scenes reason is that the IOC is trying to get back at the US for their foreign policy decisions.
