An awful lot of people *do* give to the needy all round the year. It is only a minority of people who do it only at Christmas. Maybe they make more noise about it. the people who give all round the year quietly give every month. Since there is no "special" month, there is nothing to make a special noise about.=

Since the Christmas season centers around gifts and giving for many people, they are often more willing to donate in the spirit of the season. To take advantage of this, many charities will step up their fundraising efforts at this time of year. Also, many people get Christmas bonuses or year-end bonuses in December, which increases the likelihood that those people will have a little extra to donate at that time. Giving to the needy is not non-existant the rest of the year, it is just less visible compared to the emphasis it receives during November or December. In fact, I know of a few charities that plan donation drives in February, on the reasoning that by then, the holiday bills have been paid off (but the income tax bills are not yet on the horizon).

i don't why maybe they only feel bad for needy when its cold outside i think that its not nice to care in the christmas time or it could just be a wakeup call for them when they get presents they remember 'bout them

how do you know they don't?

I think a lot of people give all year round. like at my school, we give A LOT of "Christmas basktets" (which is basically just each class fill about 10 boxes of toys, clothes, and non perishable foods for a family we are assigned.) But we also give all year round, like, sometimes (for halloween, earth day, valentines day, or random days) we would pay $2 or bring nonperishable foods for various charities probably about 4-5 times/year, then we don't need to wear our uniform that day. Also, outside school, whenever my mom and I clean the house and sort through our old clothes and stuff, we donate them to these charity bins at police or fire stations. And I think a lot of people do that too. Maybe they give more during Christmas because it's winter and (the government has people) who invite homeless people into shelters because it's too cold out. And Christmas is the time for giving so at least people are giving!

I think it also has to do with the same reason why people only go to church on Christmas and Easter...our conscience about our selfish lives get tugged and we try to bandaid over it with some token act. It's too bad we don't feel this more frequently, the world would be a better place for it.

I think it's cause of the need to clear their conscience for not giving the rest of the year. That and tax season is coming up and it good for a write off.

Well, to tell you the truth i think that most people only give the needy peple things during Christmas time is because thats when they notice them the most, and they realize that they dont have anything etc. So they give at this time. I mean, when you see a homeless etc on the side of the road aroudn this time, dont you sit back and think to yourself wow i wonder if they have anywhere to go christmas morning, or if they have a family. That makes you want to give or welcome them in or whatever people do. Its better than not giving them anything at all isnt it?!

Well, as others have noted, many people do give to the needy all year round. But for those who only give around Christmas, I personally don't find fault with that. It is part of the spirit of the season, the whole idea of giving and good will to men, etc. That may just be when people are reminded of giving, amidst their very busy lives trying to work, take care of children, pay bills, etc. Plus, Christmas is a time of year when the needy may feel alone or deprived, so what better time to let them know that they are not forgotten?
