  • I once befriended a lame skunk. He had gotten stuck in a trap and his leg was broken. And yes, I got sprayed! He chirped and chattered for a little while until he realized I was setting him free. (We lived out in the country so it was no thing for me to come upon hurt animals in traps.) Strange as it seems, we started seeing this skunk come around the house. He would sleep under our porch. No one, except myself, could get near him. He followed me like a dog and even let me get close enough to pet him a few times. My parents were worried that if he bit me I'd get rabies. So six months after I saved him, my parents called the Wildlife officer. They had to have me help them catch and crate him, because he kept hissing and spraying the officers. It took a little time but I coaxed him into letting me pick him up and put him in the box. I was crying so hard and I will never forget his little eyes. It was like he was asking me why. For the amount of time he was there, I always knew I had a shadow. But one too many times of our dogs letting "kitty fart" on them was enough. He ended up having his leg amputated and living on a wildlife sanctuary. We moved away from the farm 6 years later. I never knew what happened to Kitty, but I'm sure he had a pretty good life. Thanks for asking!
  • I had an Australian Cattle Dog, she was odd. But she was also the best pet ever.
  • My family used to have a baby silver fox named Frappy. He was soooo adorable, then he grew up and things got bad, he was just too wild for us so we had to let him go in the woods. He was a great pet while it lasted. WEve also had a couple raccoons. My fave was Risky . We kept him in our home with us. He was so good. He would eat suckers and popsicles, it was so funny! I remember he used to stand behind me when I would sit on the couch and put his paws over my eyes. His paws smelled like raisins! I miss him! He got too big and we had to give him away.
  • Chameleons were a fad in the 50's. Almost all of them died because chameleons require special care that the average pet owner can't give. I really don't think people should be allowed to buy pets until they understand what care is going to be necessary for them--for instance, nobody should be allowed to get a baby racoon unless they understand that when racoons turn adult the tamest of them can turn unpredictably, savagely, and very dangerously violent.
  • Once had a crayfish as a pet when I was younger. My mother felt bad for the li'l guy when she saw him in the grocery store, so she brought him home, and he became our "pet." Sad but true. lol
  • Praying Mantis. It was a wonderful pet, but I got it for a stupid reason. I studied 8 Step Praying Mantis Kung Fu for a few years and thought it would somehow improve my understanding of how this Martial Art was formed. I didn't learn much from a caged insect that I hand fed. I had him (I think it was a he) until he died.
  • I had a pregnant eel called Susie as a pet for 10 minutes. She wasn't that great. A bit dull really. Someone had left her in a bucket on the beach, so we took her back to the sea. I was 7, so I just thought she was my pet.
  • I owned an owl. It might have been a good pet to have but I was not a good owner for the owl to have. It was forced on me. I was a child but I had no choice but to try and take care of it. I was CLUELESS!!! One day I literally turned my back for a few moments and it died. I think it finally keeled over with a heart attack from the stress of having an incompetent owner.
  • i had a main coon for 16 years. yes, she was a good cat. when i grew up and moved out, my mother called me and said jenn, you need to get over here your cat isn't doing so well. when i got there she was lying on the floor and she looked up to me and did the best she could to purr and be pleased to see me. i picked her up and she made the most terrible sound, it was like a purr but it was like she was forcing herself to do it. i spent the night and she slept with me on the couch and in the morning she was gone. it was almost like she was waiting to say good-bye to me. her name was buka and she was the best and most beautiful cat in the world to me.
  • a flea
  • Sugar glider. They were great. Just watch those fingers.

  • i had a main coon when i was younger, she was about 16 years old. when i grew up and moved out, i left her with my mother. one night, she called me and said, jenn, you should get over here your cat isn't doing so well. when i got there, she was lying on the floor and she did her best to look up at me and purr. it was the most pitiful/terrible sound i'd ever heard, it was like she was forcing herself to breathe and be pleasing. i spent the night there and we slept on the sofa together. the next morning she was gone. it was like she waited on me. her name was buka, and she was the most beautiful cat in the entire world to me. i really miss her. my great-grandmother found her at a pound and wouldn't leave w/o her. i begged for that cat for years and she finally gave her to me. she was about two then and 16 when she died, but i supose she had a very happy life. ok i'm done know. sory that took so long.

  • I don't remember it properly because I was only young, but my brother used to have a piranha fish. It used to eat bits of steak and stuff. Cool.
  • An axelotel named Herkimer. After one night with it staring at me through the glass of its bowl I decided it was trying to steal my soul/drain the life out of me. These are some weird looking creatures-I gave him back. I've attached a picture of an axelotel so you can all see how freaky they are. This one looks pretty friendly but Herkimer was black and scary
  • I had a miniture goat that was as white as snow I named hre EVE because she was born on christmas even and some people killed her mother and they were going to kill her also so I took her home with me and she followed me everywhere, she sleeped with me, she loved for me to dress hr up. • oops,i thought the question was " what is the OLDEST pet you have ever owned?" if it's the oddest i would have to say a bat. i'm not kidding, it was a baby bat. it flew into my apartment and hung out there for almost a week. it started getting mean so i picked it up with a towel, opened the door and it flew right back out. it was kind of cool the first few days. even though it never let me touch it but still, and it was nasty. it shit everywhere. it had to go.
  • A red bellied snake that I found. Me and my dad would grow slugs to feed it. http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10370_12145_12201-61199--,00.html
  • I once caught an Opossum when I was a kid - it was a crummy pet. It was ugly as homeade sin and would hiss at you and then fall over and pretend to be dead. And it stunk like all get out. I let it go after a couple of weeks.
  • Stick insects i got from school, and no they were dreaful pets, they bread rediculously fast and did NOTHING. In the end we got fed up with them so we shoved them over our really arsey garden proud next door neighbours fence mwahaha!!
  • I haven't really had any odd pets, but my little sister has a Rooster. It's really mean even if you don't bother it. It attacks my aunts dogs. They gave it to her in school for Easter. She lives in Puerto Rico and my father said they used to do that when he was younger too, but he grew up on a farm so it wasn't odd for him.
  • When I was a little girl I would catch any wild critter than I could get my hands on. The most common "pet" were lizards. I could spend summer days catching those fast little creatures and then letting them crawl around on my t shirt. I also had a pet arctic fox named Salty. She got her name from her white coat. My uncle had a permit for foxes and let me keep her.
  • Not too odd, I guess. The twins brought home 11 salamanders from another island, and we had to find the aquarium and get it set up for them. cleaned it out again tonight. Apparently they live forever-- since Aug so far... Up here, we've had crabs [brought home from the beach] bullheads [little fish from the beach], ravens- loud and the usual cats, dogs, etc. niece had a rat. Would roll around the house in a plastic hamster ball until it died of cancer...
  • We once had a shy cat named Salem, who was shy around people, and even shy around other animals and cats. She was a nice, quiet pet, but would retreat from everyone except the people of the house.

  • A moth at work. It would always fly around me when I was working. When I was child, I kept bees (in jars with grass & flowers) and worms (kept in jars with dirt & water).
  • When I was 10,for my birthday I received from my father a Cayman (a type of alligator from the Cayman Islands). It was about 9 inches long and we keep it until it was about 3 feet long then gave it to the zoo.Another pet the family owned were 2 squirrels. The mother wa killed by a car and we raised them.
  • It really wasn't mine, but it was in my house. My step-dad bought a little monkey (not my little brother), that really acted weird. I didn't realize til years later that it was scared to death! Anyway, my step-dad tied him to a tree in the backyard, one day, and the rest is tragic. When I think back on it, anyone would have known how dangerous that was and that it shouldn't have been done. I just wish he would have known something about monkeys, before he bought one. But, that's how he was. We couldn't afford groceries, and he buys a monkey.
  • A 'possum. He was left at our barn by his momma, I guess. Momma leaves as soon as they are weaned. Possums aren't really very much fun. They don't do tricks or anything. But they are awful cute when they are little. Anyway, "Joey" stayed around for a while. The Folks let me feed him. But, when he started to get really big, Dad said, "We either take him away and let him out, ..or we eat him"...(folks do eat possum where I grew up). Well, I opted for taking him out aways down the road and let him fend for himself. I hope Joe made it. He was a good possum.
  • I once tried to keep a Red Admiral Butterfly in my room. It came in through my bedroom window but died after a couple of days.
  • We once found a baby skunk and brought it home. He was so sweet and would stand up on the sides of the box, asking to come out. He never sprayed anybody. He was very tame and settled in with my husband and me. He always smelled like cedar shavings. Even today when I smell a skunk that's the smell it brings back to my mind. And I also had a pet raven. I taught it tricks and it would carry things and place them in little buckets.
  • We had a raccoon for a week but he was mean so he had to go.
  • A baby beaver. He was very cute, but we only kept him for a week before we let him go.
  • As far as real pets go a sugar glider for a few years but had to give him up. But I do have a spider in my shower I have named kurt, hes been around for the last month or so.
  • Ex #2. :o)
  • We've had a pet skunk and also an owl and a hawk, oh and a wood rat and a jackrabbit (which is really a hare, not a rabbit)
  • My mum and dad rescued a young injured thrush once. They named him charlie and he lived for years and years. He was really cute. Used to live in a pen in the corner of the kitchen.
  • We once took care of a friend's hermit crabs, 2 or 3 of them. They ate crickets, we'd let crickets loose in their little terrarium and they'd capture and gnaw on them.
  • A praying mantis and a squirrel.
  • A dog.
  • My son! Mr bill
  • a ferret, very feral,smelly,mean..don't advise:)justme
  • A kinkajou
  • I have not had one, but I think it's strange to want to keep a gigant millipede.
  • I have owned plenty of animals people would consider strange.....Spider Monkey, snakes of all sorts, lizards of all sorts, hermit crabs, tarantulas and I even had 2 possums that I saved after their mother was killed. Only had them for about 3 months then I released them.
  • Tarantulas make me wince. But why on earth would one want a sugar glider? They sound like ankle biter dogs at night, when they're only active. And they bite, A LOT. Until they get used to you. And only then the biting goes down to a dull few. And you can't get one, you've got to have a least a pair. They smell like ferrets, and they're messy as all get down. They require big cages. I'd rather have a flying fox instead.
  • A pet eel.
  • I had a rat when I was younger. It was white with red eyes and a nasty tail... we didnt keep it for very long. It wasn't very friendly!!
