The term to heaven in a handbasket has been used since at least 1913. Meaning some sort of assured position when they die, and attaining the destination without effort.
The change in direction was quite natural, especially since it retained the alliteration.
To hell in a handbasket simply means going to seed without effort, a handbasket being easy to carry. The term has been in use since at least 1941.
Do the words HO! HO! HO! have any real significant meaning?
