Why do people maintain friendships with toxic people?

sometimes you don't know people are toxic until you are already friends and then you keep thinking "i will change them". it's like an abusive relationship. the women keeps thinking I can change the man. I grew up in a toxic family/abusive family and therefore I am kind of drawn to toxic people/toxic relationsips. Some people are so desperate for friendships and to be cared that they look for anybody and will put up with shit to be cared about even though the relationship/friendship is toxic.

Maybe they do that because they have learned it from something in their childhood or history. They're used to dealing with what is familiar and repeating their history.
