  • In my experience, conflicts ARE much more common on IM than in face-to-face contact. Basically, it's just much harder to sense another person's mood and meaning, and that tends to lead to small misunderstandings, and those small misunderstandings can quickly escalate to nasty quarrels unless both parties are careful. I think a good rule is "once you start getting annoyed, stop using IM" -- i.e. agree with your boyfriend that whenever either of you are starting to get upset, you'll quit the conversation and pick up the phone, or wait for face-to-face contact to discuss it.
  • With ALL IM's a lot gets "lost in translation". You have to know the person really well to detect if they are being genuinely angry at you or not. If your boyfriend cannot separate his real life from his "virtual life", then you do have a problem.
