It will taste bad and possibly dry out your mouth. Otherwise, it looks like nothing happens. According to http://www.usc.edu/hsc/info/pr/hmm/97winter/poison.html the packets of silica gel are harmless. According to http://www.sciencelab.com/msds.php?msdsId=9924905 silica gel is "Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of ingestion, of inhalation." What does slightly hazardous imply? It doesn't say. It says that in case of ingestion "Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel" and "Get medical attention if symptoms appear." According to http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:rZwv6GSXn9oJ:www.aerogel.com/products/pdf/Spaceloft_6200_U_MSDS.pdf+ingest+silica+gel&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=7 (its a long link - may not work) "In activated form, silica gel acts as a desiccant and can cause a drying irritation of mucous membranes and skin in cases of severe exposure" and, if ingested: "Material will pass through the body normally" So, I guess, if you ate a packet of the stuff, and didn't choke, and didn't have any obvious symptoms, it would pass right through. Possibly absorbing some water along the way.

"Silica" means sand. Nothing will happen. Um...take that back. Your fiber intake will go up impossibly. Perhaps it will take your entire Thanksgiving feast calories out when they go, given the net carb (-) effect.

You will get VERY thirsty!

Some of the silica gel pellets contain Cobalt Chloride. Some pellets are coloured. These beads are coloured blue initally when they are dry, and then change to pink once they have absorbed some moisture. The blue form is cobaltous chloride dihydrate. The pink form is cobaltous chloride hexahydrate, [CoCl2(H2O)4].2H2O. When the dihydrate is exposed to water or moist air, it forms the pink hexahydrate, When the hexahydrate is heated, it loses four molecules of water, making the blue dihydrate. As for cobalt chloride, it comes with the following warning: WARNING! HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED. CAUSES IRRITATION TO SKIN, EYES AND RESPIRATORY TRACT. MAY CAUSE ALLERGIC SKIN OR RESPIRATORY REACTION. CHRONIC EXPOSURE MAY AFFECT THYROID, LUNGS, HEART, AND KIDNEYS. Potential Health Effects ---------------------------------- Ingestion: Toxic. Causes abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, flushing of the face and ears, mild hypotension, rash, and ringing in the ears. May have cumulative toxic action where elimination cannot keep pace with absorption. Large amounts depress erythrocyte (red blood cell) production. Do not ingest silica gel. It is not dangerous itself, but contains a substance which could kill you. Although it is probably only the coloured ones which are dangerous, do not take the risk.

You get silli. :)

Your body will begin to dry up.

i am not sure if is is toxic or it just sucks the water out of you

Alone, silica gel is non-toxic, non-flammable and chemically unreactive. However, some of the beads may be doped with a moisture indicator, such as cobalt(II) chloride, which is toxic and may be carcinogenic. Cobalt (II) chloride is deep blue when dry (anhydrous) and pink when moist (hydrated). Crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis but synthetic amorphous silica gel is non-friable, and so does not cause silicosis.
