I've read that men use baby talk to avoid intimacy. This isn't always the case though.

Rochness might have a point about avoiding intimacy, but on the other hand, maybe that's how his family talks in those situations. Have you been around his mum and dad enough to know if that's how they talk to each other when expressing loving feelings? Otherwise, you should probably just ask him why he speaks that way. If you are close enough to be expressing deep feelings like love, you should be able to discuss it.

maybe he has a speach impediment. does it bother you, if so just tell him it does your nut in, if it dosnt just be pleased he's tellin ya. men hav strange ideas for what they think is a turn on.

It is meant to show that he cares for you as much as he would for a baby. We all feel intensely caring towards babies. By talking baby talk, by calling you babe or baby and other diminutive terms of endearment, he is saying that he has the same intense care for you. It is also a way of dropping barriers. Of saying that I don't have to be the serious adult with you that I have to be with the rest of the world. We all have a little bit of childishness, a little bit that would like to say sod the rules and what you ought to do, let's play. And he is saying that he wants that kind of unthinking, childlike affection with you,

Many people, when they are deeply emotionally involved in something, behave by reverting to their earliest experiences in that same emotional state. Thus, someone whose primary experience in communicating with another in a closely affectionate relationship was when they spoke "baby talk" with their parent(s) or sibling(s), is likely to revert to that style of communication when experiencing a similar affection with others. Another example of this reversional behavior under emotional load is stuttering - a person stressed about speaking will try to speak as they did when under great stress - trying to learn how to speak. This is why many of the treatments for stuttering focus on altering the stutterer's emotions when speaking, rather than the mechanics of moving their lips and tongues.

Cause he's a 38 year old idiot
-
because he wants to be a child again or simply suffers from infantilism :))
-
I have no idea why he would talk that way unless he thinks it's cute or a more affectionate way of expressing himself. If it bothers you, explain that it makes you uncomfortable and ask him to stop.
-
Because he is an asshole!
-
Sounds like you still make him feel that excited that he feels young and silly. It is a good thing. I remember feeling that excited and silly about a woman. That was a long time ago. I don't think I treat my woman very well at all these days. I certainly don't feel that extreme excitement.

Cause he's an idiot
-
does he have a speech impediment? or maybe he has a hard time saying love cause he doesn't really mean it, so he'll fabricate the word to make him feel better inside? I have no idea. Ask him/tell him "YOU SOUND LIKE A BABY" lol
-
He and his exwife/girlfriend probably did it. If you don't like it, just answer in grown-up talk and give it a little time.
-
Maybe it's a joke? I mean, I would have to be pretty high/drunk/lobotamised to reduce myself to such a level, but it's still a possibility.
