  • Well, it's unfortunately not uncommon for a parent to cover for their kids' misdeeds by claiming that they were at the doctor. Since a doctor/dentist appointment is made ahead of time, the school requiring a form to be filled out keeps a parent from writing a note saying that their kid was at the doctor when in fact he had just not written his English paper. I can't imagine my school doing it, because it would be far more work than the attendance clerks deserve, but I can see the reasoning. It's a shame so many parents are irresponsible that it is affecting everybody.
  • You are taking them out of school during school time. I think it is only logical that the school be notified in advance. I don't think that is at all intrusive. During school hours there are educational requirements that must be met..parents can't just keep their kids out of school because they feel like it. I know..it is your kid and you think you can do whatever you want, but it's not that simple. There are rules that need to be followed. :) Happy Wednesday! :)
  • The schools can not stop you from taking your child out of school. I understand the reasoning behind it, but that is giving schools much too much power over my life. Since my children's doctor's appt. usually were not pre-planned, the school would have been out of luck. I would not have had a problem providing a note from the doc saying we had been there in order to have them excused from class. Pre-approval is too far.
  • Here are my thoughts... If we let them tell us if and when we can take care of our children now, what’s next. I found some other laws in Mississippi they could start enforcing like this one... 97-29-11. Illegitimate children; person becoming natural parent of second illegitimate child; jurisdiction; notice to district and county attorneys. (1) If any person, who shall have previously become the natural parent of an illegitimate child within or without this state by coition within or without this state, shall again become the natural parent of an illegitimate child born within this state, he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail for not less than thirty (30) days nor more than ninety (90) days or by a fine of not more than two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00), or both. A subsequent conviction hereunder shall be punishable by imprisonment in the county jail for not less than three (3) months nor more than six (6) months or by a fine of not more than five hundred dollars ($500.00), or both. Provided, however, that for the purpose of this section, multiple births shall be construed to be the birth of one (1) child. (2) The circuit court of the county in which said illegitimate child is born shall have jurisdiction of any action brought under this section. No male person shall be convicted solely on the uncorroborated testimony of the female person giving birth to the child. (3) On or before the tenth day of each month, the Mississippi State Health Department shall notify in writing the district attorney of each district in Mississippi and the county attorney of all counties having county attorneys of the name and address of each person shown as a parent on the birth certificate of any illegitimate child filed with said department during the preceding month. Sources: Codes, 1942, 2018.6; Laws, 1964, ch. 341, 1- (Paras. 1-3), eff from and after passage (approved May 26, 1964). I would understand if they asked all parent to try and let your child’s teacher know beforehand that they were going to the doctor, I already do that but I will not ask for permission to take care of my children.
  • yes they are getting too involved !! it's annoying !!
  • That is another piece of the picture as to why I am homeschooling. I was asked to help enforce this kind of **** when I was teaching. I didn't feel it was my place as a teacher or our right as a district to behave this way. It doesn't catch the people the school district wants to catch. It goes after the responsible parents, not the irresponsible ones. Its counterproductive, it is going to drive responsible parents to take their kids out of school and either homeschool or put them into private school. And it isn't for any purpose except to keep attendance numbers and test scores high for No Child Left Behind or for state funding. So I am no longer teaching and I am not putting my medically fragile kid in school. I frequently have three days of doctors appointments for her in one week. I'd be out of days and in court in one month.
