  • White smoke out of the exhaust pipe generally indicates engine coolant leaking into the combustion chamber. The cause of this could be a cracked head gasket, but due to the extreme loss of power and overheating problem I would suspect that you have a big crack in the head (not always visible to the eye), and some valves stuck open. Look for oil in your coolant(black spots floating around), and coolant in your oil(the oil will look creamy or milky on the dipstick). If these conditions don't exist then the coolant is only leaking into the combustion chamber and you should have a compression test done on all cylinders to determine the extent of the problem and whether it might be cheaper to find a used replacement engine, due to it's age.
