We used to not have alimony at all but it was decided that a person that stayed home to raise children or take care of the home while the other partner educated themselves was entitled to alimony. It was said that if the educated party divorced the other party then they would have no means of support, they have no skills but being a homemaker. So in a case like this they would get two years ( as long as they did not remarry)of alimony no more. And it depends on the income of the party paying.
