  • Antidepressants are theoretically meant to help your neurochemistry correct itself - essentially to normalize your moods until your can correct the behaviors that are likely leading to your feelings of depression. This is why I always recommend therapy in conjunction with medication. If you utilize antidepressants as depression-suppressant you run the risk of psychological and chemical dependency. The medication won't solve the problem; the medication gives you a chance to balance out your behavior while you work through the problems in the hopes of allowing you to lead a more 'normal' functional lifestyle. The pills mask the symptoms but aren't a cure. Let me know if you have any other questions, and good luck.
  • i cant honestly say i've been in your place but i'm definitely here for support. and praying for you.
  • I was severely depressed, and eventually took time off work (my source of stress was domestic, but it was badly affecting my work after five to seven years of living hell at home), and attended both individual and group therapy. I was quite apprehensive about this, but I needn't have been - it was very helpful, and I even enjoyed it. As for anti-depressants, I always try to stay away from prescription drugs, preferring natural products instead, so I did take some St Johns Wort, but never really knew whether it had any effect or not. My only other advice is to try to find a true friend that you can use as a sounding board for your fears and worries, somebody who won't judge you but who will be there for you when you need them. This person (or persons) should be used in addition to professional counsellors, as their role is somewhat different. I wish you well.
  • you have my unbridled support. i tried every medication on the market, with limited success, then I went bungee jumping, mountain climbing, speed racing etc. Trust me, you haven't lived untill you have tried everything. You have my moral support, but it will fade into insignifigance when you live your dreams...do it, dude.
  • I understand your avoiding to take antidepressants. But in some situations it could still be the better choice. Maybe also your depression could be helped with some kind of psychotherapy. Did you think about that?
  • There's soooooo many people on anti-ds these days it's really ok. I take like a million pills a day so ur definitely doing better than me :-D lol. B4 I went on them I thought they'd make me feel all weird & out of it but it was the exact opposite, that's how I felt b4 I went on them & they make me feel "normal." Hmmm I hope that makes u feel better & not worse...
  • Hey hun!!! I am not sure what kind of place you are in but I have been to hell and back many times and every doctor that I have ever seen has always tried to push antidepressants on me. I never took them. I prefer other things to relieve my stress. I haven't talked to you in a long time. I don't know what is going on with you but email me if you would like to talk about anything. ((((HUGS))))
  • B, Antidepressants are for depression, not stress. I have been depressed for years but recently it has worsened. I take a very heavy dose (over the recommended dose as prescribed by my specialist) and even that has to be accompanied by a mood elevator. Sometimes depression is caused by hormone depletions in the brain and psychotherapy will not help. Try to find out what the cause of your depression is. Major depression causes not just depression but memory loss, confusion, lack of motivation, physical tiredness, along with a slew of other nasties. At one stage I was so confused I could not even dial a phone number. Good luck to you. Don't take ADs for stress.
  • Should have tried cannabis instead.
