I was invited to a shower by my hubby's step mom she is the ex wife of a very rich man ( I am poor) her daughter is getting married I would feel uncomfortable. Should I go ? My mother in law says she probably just invited me to be polite.

If you would feel uncomfortable, don't go, and say that "you unfortunately have other plans that day."

Personally i would go. If you were invited i would show up. plus at showers im sure they will have good food and i dont care if your rich or poor but good food is good food :P if they are just inviting you to be polite, you may as well go enjoy yourself for the afternoon. And plus are you sure your mother in law didnt just say that to get a rise out of you?

How do you get on with your hubbys step mom - does she make you feel uncomfortable the rest of the time. If you get on well with her at other times I am sure she wouldn't want you to feel uncomfortable - if you get on really well tell her that you are worried you may feel out of place; it probably won't have occurred to her and she may be able to put your mind at rest by telling you what to expect. If you don't normally get on well make an excuse and don't go but don't dwell on it and worry about it - make a decision and stick to it. Also consider how your mother-in-law normally talks about the step mom - perhaps a little jealousy is creeping in?
