Because somewhere deep inside they know you're right and they hate it. (Braces for the negative ratings, but I call 'em like I see 'em.)

I don't think I'm mean :'( saying "Why are atheists so mean" is like saying "why do Christians try to shove religion down your throat?" its a terrible generalization based on a few expierences.

I'm surprised and, to be honest, somewhat skeptical about this event. Did your church do something or your pastor say something in public to raise such ire? Or did they just turn up for the hell of it? I must admit, I'm deeply skeptical that they just 'turned up' without any provocation whatsoever. If they did though - they're an aberration. The vast majority of atheists I know would not bother to do that, would live and let live and, quite frankly, are too nice to do something like that without provocation. . On the other hand, I've been threatened, pushed, shoved, harrassed, sworn at and cursed by some christians simply for trying to go see a movie they did not like...

They are mean because they are full of fear. Deep down in their consciousness they are aware that God is real and they don't know how to explain it so they rebel against it.

Gee, I don't know. Maybe we get cranky when people make generalizations about us.

Can you describe this event more fully? How do you know they were Atheists? What church do you go to? Is there any policy at your church or stance they were protesting? To be quite frank, I'm skeptical about this event. Sounds like random baiting, since there are no specifics whatsoever. Atheists I know don't make it a point to do anything particular on religious days or near churches. They are busy getting on with their lives. It is theists who think religion and god warrant so much attention. I'm Wiccan, and I've seen pagan gatherings protested, but only by Christians. I've never seen Atheists show up at even our largest gatherings and begin to cause trouble. Never.
