I don't know about software, but I would suggest a hard drive partition.

Depends on the OS(s) you want to install. Most of the time you can get away with just using the partition manager and boot loader from one of the operating systems to manage the whole thing. What operating systems will you be installing? Otherwise you could download the Ultimate Boot CD or Hiren's Boot CD and use one of the partition utilities on the CD (I like Partition Magic on Hiren's).
