One can increase strength without significant size gains. I think that the fewer the repetitions for weight training with heavier weights increases strength without increasing size. More reps with lighter weights increases size without much impact on strength. Also, a lot of strength is related to skill and psychological willpower. Take the class example: a mother cannot get the lid of a jar of jelly but as soon as she notices her child stuck underneath a car, she's able to lift the car up. Obviously, something is making her stronger in that situation. Whether it is chemical, like adrenaline, or psychological, the body has some degree of control over its muscles. Thus, if you have more willpower, your biceps might be able to overpower mine.
