There are a vast number of "Ryu" or "family" styles ... parent teaches children (and sometimes a few others) ... some do but most do not use belt ranks. There are over 400 officially recognized styles of Karate. The "officially recognized" styles have accepted some sort of belt system in order to have gotten their recognition ... but there are still some obscure Karate styles that refuse to use belt ranks. There are also several "Jitsu/Jutsu" arts that remain obscure and still refuse to use belt ranks ... but, like Karate, most have accepted belts as part of their official status.
