This goes back to tribal times. Boys are expected to fight for the tribe; some die, and those who come back victorious have several wives. Women stay at home to raise more warriors. Basically, our genes expect sons to follow the "high risk, high gain" path and daughters to follow the "play it safe" path. The world has changed - somewhat - but our genes have not.

Loaded question :) Well, being a mother of daughters I cant say I would be different as I dont have a son but I think the basic reason is girls in general are the weaker sex. Statistics are that its women who get murdered, sexually assaulted, beaten and many other horrible crimes that totally outweigh what happens to boys, not saying boys dont experience this as well, but the numbers are off the scale for females. And like the person above said.. its primitive... goes back to caveman days... you man me woman... I protect... at least thats what is written :) Girls are more vulnerable in society.. they are exploited.... I mean look at magazine racks.. how many girls are spread out in skin covers as opposed to men.... its all there... so parents are concerned and they should be, its a good sign when your parents are protective, they care.
