I don't believe being straight or gay is a choice, although I do believe that a person can fall in love with anyone, at any time, regardless of gender, if they keep an open enough mind.

I have never known this to be true. A gay man can choose to act straight but a gay man is a gay man no matter he acts like for the world to see.

I was thinking about this yesterday, funnily enough. Except I was thinking more along the lines of 'if a gay person chooses to be gay, does a straight person choose to be straight?' Obviously no. Ignorance on this topic amazes me. Of course it's a choice for some people. I bet a lot of 'straight' people are actually gay, but they choose to be straight to keep up appearances. In fact I know a few who gave in to their desires at about 35 because they accepted themselves/couldn't stand it any more. Anyway, no I don't think a straight man can choose to be gay, because when it is natural animal attraction, you can't choose.

I think that's the whole idea, isn't it? If being gay is a choice, that assumes that either we are all straight and some of us choose to be gay, we are all gay and most of us choose to be straight or we are all nothing with most of us choosing to be straight and some of us choosing to be gay. Kinsey said that most people fall somewhere on the spectrum between "straight" and "gay" (I think he gave a number between 1 and 6, with 1 being totally and completely and only attracted to members of the opposite sex and 6 being totally gay). In any grouping of humans, there is one repetitive pattern of distribution- the bell curve. So, assuming a bell curve, most of us fall into the middle of the spectrum. Of that group, in the humpiest part of the bell, people are definitely in the position to choose to "be" straight or gay. But really, I hate those terms. I hope one day we will not need to label ourselves as one way or the other, and those humpy bell people will be free to pursue what is right for them without being pigeon-holed.

There is no choice unless you are bi-sexual, but even then it's not a choice...cos you are neither just hetero or gay, but bi-sexual.

A straight cannot chose to be gay. They can however chose to be honest with themselves.
